The Three Gorges Dam is one of the biggest if not the biggest gravity dam in the world. China is currently seeing record flooding, with three-four days of rain still in the future for the area around the dam.
When the dam was under construction, they asked foreign consultants to come in and inspect the dam. The consultants noted poor concrete quality and insufficient rebar supports. The Chinese then kicked the consultants out and called them racist.
A good video of the extent of the flooding.
The dam itself has taken damage from a 2012 earthquake and is now currently stressed. If it were to break, millions of lives could be at stake, especially since a huge amount of power is wired through the dam, thus, if it breaks during the night, people could be making a blind rush into the dark and into a wall of water.
“See, if you had been a Who fan, you would know that the right lyric is: Ive a feeling 21 is going to be a good year...”
Actually ‘51 wasn’t that great of a year for that bunch.
> Chinese manufacturing does only one thing really well - deceive the customer. <
Yep. And they will put on labels that are entirely false. A number of years ago they got caught putting formaldehyde free labels on floor planking that was lousy with formaldehyde.
... prayin wont do you no good.
I thought that FReepers believed in the power of prayer.
Oh well ohwellohwell
Yeh! Except they ordered Chino and misread it as China!
“...communists decided that China would become a leader in steel production.”
However, in contrast, China is very good at stealing property—intellectual property, that is.
Maybe a closer look .... just zoom in a little...
Oh. Aw geez. Well then. I'd suggest residents start running from the area immediately.
The Johnstown flood on a massive scale
...if your electric car is halfway charged and the hydroelectric dam bursts, how far will you get before your batteries dies and the waters overcome you?
Made in China with interior products, like everything else they manufacture.
Faster please....
Paging Barnes Wallis, please pick up the white courtesy phone.
(White? That’s racist!)
Thanks for the link. Taiwan is no doubt looking on with great interest. This dam must surely be an inviting target for the militaries of certain interests strongly opposed to the PRC.
I totally doubt Taiwan has any immediate military interest in the dam.
Of course if Taiwan were attacked by China, that would open up all sorts of military possibilities, HOWEVER THAT is not the situation today.
Absolutely, Taiwan preemptively attacking the PRC is beyond anything in my comprehension.
...Paging Barnes Wallis
may be hard to get the RAF 617 Squadron that far into china
I also do not think that India, Vietnam, the U.S. or anyone else looks at the Three Gorges dam as of any military interest, except in some all out war scenario. Small minor conflicts do not lightly bring cause for considering such a target, knowing equal retaliation would be the result. So, minus any “big war” scenario, I think there is not ANY military interest, by anyone. “Future planning” for all possible scenarios goes on all the time, but that does not make things of immediate interest.
I remember reading about the rolled concrete construction of this dam in Engineering and Mining Journal back in mid ‘80s.
The volume of concrete used is mind boggling.
.
Happens when you try to cheap out on the construction.
Yes it happened in America - long ago - and thats why they arent allowed to build them ‘cheaping out’ any more.
