"In a trial heat for the 1984 presidential election, former Vice President Walter Mondale is now leading President Ronald Reagan by a 53-44 percent margin...."

That’s a really bad example. That was almost 2 years before the election. We were in a deep recession at that point.
Um—last time I looked we had recession numbers. :-)

Exactly. The economy took off like a rocket in mid 1984.
Great evidence that polls in general and especially polls this far away from the Election are not only inaccurate but tainted in favor of Democrats.
Carter 59%
Reagan 36%
Reagan ended up crushing Carter in November 980
Reagan 44 states
Carter 6 states + DC.
You'll probably find the Pdf of the poll on the Harris site.
November 1980
I wish theyd take a poll predicting the winner. I bet most Democrats think Trump will win.
“I wish theyd take a poll predicting the winner. I bet most Democrats think Trump will win.”
I have never seen a poll that predicted an election to the exact percentage point, and decimal.
I sure miss President Mondale. /S
I saw one recently that asked about who do you think will win, and it did indeed have Trump leading.
The outcome of most all polls reflect the political views of the polls sponsor. That is also true of social media sites. They censor the posts that don’t agree with the web site owners’ political views...like Google, Facebook, etc etc.
In July of 1988, Mike Dukakis was “building a substantial lead” over George Bush.
They had one in March of 1984 showing either Mondale or Gary Hart beating Reagan by eight to ten. It’s always the same.
I guess you're too young to remember the Reagan years. We were no longer in a recession by 1984, thanks to a very powerful recovery which was just starting in early 1983.
I don’t think so. Do you have a link?
That was in January 1980. That was like the Reagan-Mondale early 1983 poll situation in reverse, because the economy was starting to rapidly deteriorate in early 1980. Also the disaster of the failed attempt to free the Iranian hostages hadn’t happened yet. They were still in captivity on election day 1980.
Polls polls polls
It was in January yes. But Carter was leading by a massive 23 points in that poll.
No one comes back from such a deep hole in just 10 months let alone win in a landslide of 44 to 6 states.
The polls have been left wing agenda driven political tools since there were polls.
I read one of the books on Reagan (not sure which since I’ve read quite a few of them) in which Newsweek deliberately made up a fake poll against Reagan and the then editor boasted about it to Reagan/Reagan campaign after Reagan had won. He was not the least bit contrite.
