Column: Why are so many people not wearing masks? Here's how they explain it
LA Times via MSN ^ | 6/17/20 | Steve Lopez

**SNIP**

Last week, Orange County’s public health director resigned after her call for mandatory face masks prompted a death threat, a security detail and a poster of her with a Hitler mustache and swastikas. On Tuesday in Santa Ana, face mask supporters were pushed and mocked by foes who chanted, “Hey hey, ho ho, these masks have got to go.”

**SNIP**

In Glendora, some of the people without face coverings were with relatives, and others were carrying masks in their pockets. But it wasn’t hard to find people who told me they didn’t buy into the argument that masks necessarily limit the spread of the coronavirus.

“It’s probably driven by political scare tactics,” said a 77-year-old retiree strolling with his wife, neither of them wearing masks. He added that he didn’t know anyone who has gotten COVID-19, but if reported cases are up, maybe it’s simply because there’s more testing rather than a worrisome surge.

**SNIP**

And then I came upon Robin and her daughter Natasha, both maskless. Robin said she likes to breathe in the fresh air on a nice day, and they cover up in stores, as required. But they weren't sold on the usefulness of masks. Natasha said even the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has contradicted itself on the matter.

No question, there’s still a lot to learn about the virus, and opinions on masks have varied. But for the record, the CDC currently “recommends wearing cloth face coverings in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain.”

Because they do not work unless you are clean shaven;

because you are recirculating an virus you may have and concentrating it;

because they only are good for 4 hours and washing destroys the effectiveness of the filter;

because they are generally a waste of money unless you are in a clinical environment.

And all this ‘safety’ and ‘sterility’ degrades your immune system.

Why do you assume Garry is infected - the mask will not prevent you from catching it?

If you are wearing a mask, I assume you are infected.

I’m sure that wearing a mask has its own health hazards because it cuts the flow of oxygen, forces the wearer to breathe in the CO2 he exhaled, and quickly gets contaminated with the microbes that he exhaled.

It’s a circular argument:

“Masks prevent you from giving the virus to someone else.”

“Masks don’t prevent you from getting the virus.”

So if you wear a mask, you can get the virus. If you don’t wear a mask, you can get the virus.

The argument is not logical.

In my area, about 25% of shoppers don’t wear masks.

So 75% of the shoppers in your area believe that a piece of fabric that won't stop most pieces of dust 1000 times greater in diameter than coronavirus gives them some type of protection? It is no wonder we have so many liberals elected to office.

I was fit tested for SCBA face pieces and N95 style masks twice a year for most of my career. Even properly designed masks that comply with industry standards don't give you any protection if they are not worn correctly. The nonsense that I see daily just boggles the mind.

Because a piece of cloth is not going to stop you from being exposed to or infected by a virus....

Pure and simple... Masks are simply theater.

If you want to mandate everyone wear an N95 mask at all times, fine.. but even that doesn’t stop a virus 100%... and most places the “mask” requirement is a joke... here’s a bandana... or an old shirt tied around your face... that’ll teach that virus.

Its theater, nothing more.

One of our local supermarket chains actually will throw you out if you don’t wear a mask, even though we are finally in green...

Cowards... and ignoramuses are all this world seems to be full of today.

“Gary” probably goes by Sally or Mary as in “don’t trip over your skirt on the way out, Sally!”
I have a 50 year old nephew that is in abject terror of getting the covid. Make that 2 nephews.

Even Tommie the Commie Wolf was forced to back down and say that masks were not mandatory (though most businesses run by Karens are still requiring them for you to enter).

The most frightening thing about this charade is how willingly the people gave up their freedoms in exchange for virtue signalling. I won’t ever forgive them for that.

It’s not circular logic, it’s a flat out lie.

No, masks do NOT prevent you from giving the virus to someone else... even an n95 mask will NOT prevent 100% the spread of infection.... and most masks being worn are simply pieces of cloth. they offer no protection either direction... they are purely theater for the lemmings.

Not just that, they concentrate virus and other particulate that your body is trying to get rid of in your nasal cavities and make it more likely that you will get sick. Below a certain threshold your bodies other defenses can fight off most pathogens, above that you get sick... if you have a compromised immune system this threshold is lower.

Lol, I was never under the illusion that we lived among anything BUT idiots. People are unrecognizable to me when wearing a mask. They say hello to me and I don’t know who they are. It’s all so depressing. I just keep to myself now.

Simple, I don’t wear a mask because I’m not frightened of this over-hyped flu. If I catch it, I’ll deal with it. I’m less than 60 with no underlying conditions. Like the seasonal flu, I will probably be fine.

One can’t live their lives like leftists — in constant fear...

Some people wear masks in the car because it is easier than readjusting them before another stop.

And every time you touch your mask you get germs on your fingers. Then when you pick your nose because the mask makes your face itchy, you get a real exposure from the supermarket cart you were just pushing around.

Because I can read.

I can go to the OSHA Website and plainly read that Cloth masks and Surgical Masks do not stop COVID-19. (https://www.osha.gov/SLTC/covid-19/covid-19-faq.html#cloth-face-coverings)

Well, what do they base that on? Google “SARS-CV-2” and “Size”. You can find plenty of official websites that will give you the size of the virus itself. Then Google “N95 Masks Particulate Size” and find plenty of resources that tell you how small of a particle that an N95 Mask will filter. Here’s a spoiler - The SARS-CV-2 virus is ~20 times smaller than the smallest particle that an N95 mask will filter out.

It is common sense. If you aren’t sick, wearing a cloth mask or even a surgical mask will do nothing for you. If you ARE sick with COVID-19, the cloth mask and surgical mask will catch most of the heavy droplets that spew out when you cough or sneeze. That is it.

If you don’t want to catch the COVID-19, then do this:

- Don’t touch your face without washing//sterilizing your hands with soap, ESPECIALLY after you go into a public place touching surfaces.

- Don’t sit/stand within 6 feet of someone for more than 2-3 minutes. If you stand in line somewhere, keep separated by 6 feet or more.

- Unless a person coughing or sneezing, you likely won’t catch COVID-19 just by walking past them. If you are out in public and you hear or see someone cough or sneeze, give them a wider berth

I’m visiting Seattle right now (from Rural KY). People will literally cross the street to avoid walking by us. It’s funny. It’s really fun to just “window shop” at Safeway to walk around all the scared adult children and watch their response.

Meanwhile, my 90 year old father here was just put in hospice this morning with an inoperable tumor in his brain. All of his children from around the country are here visiting with our 92 year old mom and will be visiting him in the next few days, all sans mask. We’re all in our 60’s and none of us are taking this thing any more seriously than we take the flu. We’re all fine.

The only way any of our lives have changed is that some businesses are not open and some require masks, so we don’t go there.

My sister did use her private jet to get here and she admited that flying commercial concerns her. I think she just uses the excuse to use the jet. ;)
