Column: Why are so many people not wearing masks? Here's how they explain it
LA Times via MSN ^ | 6/17/20 | Steve Lopez

**SNIP**

Last week, Orange County’s public health director resigned after her call for mandatory face masks prompted a death threat, a security detail and a poster of her with a Hitler mustache and swastikas. On Tuesday in Santa Ana, face mask supporters were pushed and mocked by foes who chanted, “Hey hey, ho ho, these masks have got to go.”

**SNIP**

In Glendora, some of the people without face coverings were with relatives, and others were carrying masks in their pockets. But it wasn’t hard to find people who told me they didn’t buy into the argument that masks necessarily limit the spread of the coronavirus.

“It’s probably driven by political scare tactics,” said a 77-year-old retiree strolling with his wife, neither of them wearing masks. He added that he didn’t know anyone who has gotten COVID-19, but if reported cases are up, maybe it’s simply because there’s more testing rather than a worrisome surge.

**SNIP**

And then I came upon Robin and her daughter Natasha, both maskless. Robin said she likes to breathe in the fresh air on a nice day, and they cover up in stores, as required. But they weren't sold on the usefulness of masks. Natasha said even the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has contradicted itself on the matter.

No question, there’s still a lot to learn about the virus, and opinions on masks have varied. But for the record, the CDC currently “recommends wearing cloth face coverings in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain.”

I’ve put on a mask for two (and only two) reasons:

1) A sign posted on the door of a private business politely asked me to.

2) It’s a stupid decision made in a corporate HQ or the Governor’s Office, and I did not want to take my anger out on some poor nine-dollar-an-hour store clerk.

My sympathies for your father. I hope that you can spend time together without the Covid Gestapo preventing you. I experience the same behavior here in Philadelphia. People cling to the wall when I pass them on the street as though I have leprosy. I laugh at them. But the height of stupidity is seeing them in masks while hiking on isolated trails. Good grief, it’s as though they enjoy having the panic, it’s adding excitement to their humdrum lives.

My pet peeve. I see it constantly while hiking. Never seen such stupidity in my life.

It’s been disheartening feeling so disappointed in neighbors and fellow citizens.

Oh gosh you made me laugh out loud. First laugh of the day. A billion of the stupidest people on Facebook is not very encouraging.

For me wearing a mask is a sign of gullibility. The Emperor has no clothes.

A friend of mine died of the disease. Months ago, and in NYC but still. She died alone. Had family and friends, and was teleconferencing just days before. She actually was in ok spirits when they vented her. She died a week after developing the cough.

Granted, that was then and this is now but still. Bear with me here.

If I were to get it I would have to say goodbye to my wife and daughter while I was in the hospital. They couldn’t visit. There is a real chance that I could die or get brain damage (My cousin’s son has brain damage now because of his respiration in a major hospital just 2 weeks ago). It would be the last time they saw me, really.

One year ago I said goodbye to my father, whom I was very close to. He had cancer and decided to “Die like a doctor”. He called me on what he thought was his last day and I got on a plane to see him. I booked 4 days and brought a suit. I was prepared. What I wasn’t prepared for was for him to survive the 4 days and me to have to go home. I had a family to provide for. I said goodbye for the last time and he was still alive. It really traumatized me.

I don’t want my family to go through that. If I just shrug it off like you flubros do, then all I’m really telling my family, the world and our Lord above is that I don’t respect them.

All I’ve been asked to do is wash my hands, wear a mask and not get too close to people. That’s all I have to do to at least show that I care about my family.

So you can take your counterpoint and stuff it. All of you. I’m wearing the mask and I’m staying away from people until we can get access to promising treatment. It costs me nothing. It gains me everything. And if anyone chooses not to wear a mask and do the same then they are showing me that I’m not important and I’m worth risking.

Not gonna happen. Good day.

We went to a big city hospital recently for my son and I actually saw people jogging outside with those stupid things on. Absolutely ridiculous.

*** “For me wearing a mask is a sign of respect. It communicates more than words.

Like wearing a suit to an interview. It doesn’t mean you can do the job any better, it shows those you are meeting with that you respect their time.

Im really surprised to see so many “old conservatives” reject this notion” ***

Do you color coordinate your knee pads with your suit or the mask?

You just articulated "virtue signaling". You should add crossing your fingers to the prescription. But then people couldn't see you do that and know that you care. Please avoid stepping on sidewalk cracks. Thanks!

Joggers and runners wearing masks have to be at the top rung of stupidity.I really hope that none of them have jobs that might put people in peril as pilots.
