I’ve seen that movie before. Read up on the “MOVE” confrontation in the City of Philadelphia back in the late-70’s. A liberal democrat city administration ordered tried to ignore the problem. When the surrounding community finally demanded they “Do something” about blockaded streets and bullhorn harranges and rats from uncollected garbage, the mayor (Philly’s first Black Mayor) ordered the police commission to “Do Something”. That “something” caused a fire that burned out 8 city blocks. When I see liberal city mayors dealing with street-communists I know one thing — the mayor will not come out on top. The only reason Wilson Goode survived politically was because he was black. But he was crippled politically for the rest of his tenure.

Abraham Lincoln tried that (jailing some outspoken politial opponents) during the Civil War. His authority was questioned (the states being in the Union), and it wasn’t a good “look” for a man attempting to abolish slavery. Trump would be foolish to meddle in state politics in such a heavy-handed way unless that state were to try and secede.
