About 20 local community leaders and lawmakers stood in the hot sun in front of the site of the Republican National Conventions final events and pleaded with the mayor to stop them in light of recent protests, the coronavirus and other issues.
**SNIP**
Many on Friday were also concerned with the impact protests that normally come with presidential nominating conventions will have on communities near the arena. Activist Hope McMath said the city is struggling to handle the protests that are happening on a daily basis.
To think that we will be ready in less than three months to handle that on a much greater scale than anything we have seen to date is naive at best, she said. It is also an issue of hypocrisy for a city whose mayor claims `One City, One Jacksonville.′ This flies in the face of that statement.
In a statement in answer to questions about how the Sheriffs Office will prepare for the convention, Sheriff Mike Williams said they have two very clear priorities to deliver.
Ensure the event attendees are safe and ensure our community is safe, his statement read. I am confident that the men and women of the Jacksonville Sheriffs Office are ready to meet the demands of such a large scale national event coming to our city. I look forward to working with so many state and federal partners for a successful and safe event for all.

Bikers will show up.
In the spirit of Evergreen University which told white people to stay off campus when their homegrown BLM decided to “protest” on campus. If you don’t like the Republican Convention, stay home or leave town while it is in session
Judging by the appearance of the crowd, they are trying to turn this into a race issue. A typical DemonRat trick.
these people are the biggest bunch of whiners, shut up, stay home, don’t protest, don’t riot, there are lots of things that they could do, but no they want to demand people they disagree with be silenced.
What a bunch of asshats.
I go by the philosophy of it’s better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.
I live in Jacksonville and have volunteered with the RNC to work in some capacity at the Convention or the events surrounding it....
I say call up the National Guard, seal off a large area of downtown around the hotels and arena.....
Designate areas outside of this zone for protesting.
The RNC Convention is going to happen somewhere, it might as well be in Jacksonville as anywhere and to back down because of pressure by Democrats would be huge titanic mistake
Everything the Left does is motivated by the will to power and domination. They have zero interest in fairness and compassion.
Oh my God. They “stood in the hot sun?”
They must really be serious!
Imagine a hot sun in Florida. What are the odds?
Wow..20 leaders!!!
Ive volunteered too. I certainly hope the mayor is not even considering their demands.
They really just want to eliminate the Republican Party - and Republicans - altogether. If the mayor is intimated into cancelling it in Jacksonville, I think its going to be very difficult to hold it anywhere - that is, it wont happen at all. This, of course, is just what they want.
Jacksonville is an ideal place for the Republican convention: Republican controlled city, in a Republican state.
The police WILL NOT be ordered to “stand down” for Antifa.
If these “Leaders” can’t make their followers behave, then they are not truely Leaders. They are simply agitators who should be held responsible for the actions of their people.
Jax: it’s going to be a riot!
I live in Clay but I’m very familiar with the area.
It will be nearly impossible to prevent the highways and bridges from being blocked by “protesters” from BLM and Antifa.
The slummy areas around the highways and bridges will provide the staging area for the “protesters.” They will just swarm up onto key highways and bridges and that’s it.
Police would have to evacuate a few square miles of inhabitants to prevent this, which is obviously impossible.
The arena where the event will be held is surrounded by poor black neighborhoods. Duval County might be more or less conservative overall, but that area votes Rat.
See above about BLM and Antifa blocking highways and bridges with protesters.
To keep those roads open at key times would require a massive and heavy handed police response, just what BLM and Antifa would like to see on national TV: tear gas and batons, riot police in massive numbers.
They could have the convention at my property. Secure, remote, spectacular scenery and it’s a very conservative area. It’s impossible to be a bum up here.
If you remember back when the Super Bowl was in Jacksonville, they closed off the Main Street Bridge open only for Pedestrian traffic, same for Bay Street from the Landing to the Stadium....sealing off a few blocks of downtown to official traffic can be done...that’s where people like the National Guard could be used....
How many years have people done exactly that...stand in the sun...in the wonderful land of Disney World?
Suddenly they are squeamish.
What low lives.
“About 20 local community leaders and lawmakers...” The usual Black Democrats.
