Republican senators rebelled against Donald Trump late Wednesday by voting to tell the Army to rename bases named after Confederate generals within the next three years.

The voice vote was on an amendment to the annual Pentagon policy bill — the Defense Authorization Act — which was put forward by Sen. Elizabeth Warren, the Massachusetts Democrat and former presidential candidate.

It came hours after Donald Trump tweeted furiously that he will “not even consider” renaming Forts Bragg, Hood, Lee and others.

The move puts the Republican senators on a collision course with Trump, who White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany suggested would veto any legislation which renamed the bases. …

To take it away now is effectively asking the nation to break it's implied word that the designation was permanent.

Well heck, they broke all the treaties with the Indian nations too. It's the same thing.

As I said in another thread, I don’t think this is a bad idea.

It's a bad idea because it is basically being done at the point of a gun.

It has little to do with generals and Columbus and more to do with the power of the mob to get concessions over small things, which legitimizes their grievances and allows them to demand more and more. Why now? The timing is not a coincidence.

THAT is SO correct !

The spineless Republicans want to be on the ‘good’ side of history knowing that Trump will veto it and they will be safe with their voters.

This country is losing its identity. I’m glad I’m seventy years old and won’t live to see the day America has totally gone in the crapper. On the other hand, based on current trajectory, I may be wrong.

“Defy?” The Brits don’t get how our system works. Members of Congress don’t owe allegiance to the President, and don’t “defy” him when they don’t vote the way he wants.

George’s brother. They apparently created the character to fill in on All In The Family due to Sherman Hemsley having become unavailable due to obligations on a Broadway play. He was played by Mel Stewart. He never appeared in The Jeffersons, although he was mentioned in a couple of episodes.
