US F-22 Raptors were sent out to intercept Russian bombers near Alaska on Wednesday morning, North American Aerospace Defense Command said. The US fighters were supported by KC-135 Stratotankers and E-3 Airborne Warning and Control System planes. The NORAD force intercepted two Russian aircraft formations consisting of bombers, fighters, and early warning aircraft in the Alaskan Air Defense Identification Zone. One group came "within 20 nautical miles of Alaskan shores," NORAD said. Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories. US Air Force fighters backed by support aircraft intercepted two pairs of Russian bombers in the Alaskan Air Defense Identification Zone on Wednesday. Two of the bombers came just 8 miles from US airspace.

The first Russian formation, which consisted of two Tu-95 bombers supported by two Su-35 fighter jets and an A-50 airborne early warning and control aircraft, came "within 20 nautical miles of Alaskan shores," North American Aerospace Defense Command said in a statement.

MSN BS. It was 30 miles. Not 20. That said, that was too close. Our monitoring and response time in this instance was NOT up to par.
Though with this said, there were 8 OLD Russian turboprop bombers in this incursion. We scrambled 2 F-22’s. That was overkill. One F-22 in a real “situation” would take all of them out in seconds.
But, it is more than concerning they got within that range before we reacted.

Maybe the Russians would bomb the communist occupiers in Seattle and do the nation a favor.

Russia and China are not a good pairing. Russia has a massive amount of land and resources in the east with no population living there.

China wants land and resources and has a massive population.

They play patsy publicly, but there is not much trust there based on historical conflicts and geopolitics.

They’ve been doing this for the last 40 years. So do we. We’re better at it.

Not sure our response was all we’re capable of. They are, after all, probing defenses. No sense showing all of our cards.

It was whatever they could manage to get in the air that day.

Oh I’m scared! What are the Russians going to do? Invade the US and lower our taxes, and protect our orphans from being adopted by homosexual couples?

Russia has a low, flat income tax - much lower than US’s.

And Russia still tries to protect children

Russia regrets selling Alaska to the USA. They want it back. The big war is coming and it will not be between Russia and the US—No, it will be between US, Vietnam, India Vs. China, North Korea, Cuba and Iran. Russia will sit this out along with Europe and South America. Lots of fighting in Vietnam and in the Middle East. Naval battles in the China Seas. This time America herself will be hit hard. Many Democrats will fight for China and resist serving in “Trump’s War.”

The Left excoriated Gov. Palin for pointing out the close proximity of Alaska to Russia. They’re an ignorant, hateful lot.

Our adversaries can’t believe that we can handle internal strife and external threats all at the same time.

We are SOOO NUMBER ONE in this respect, thank you very much.

That was overkill. One F-22 in a real “situation” would take all of them out in seconds.

If it takes a platoon, send a battalion. Another point, it one of the F-22's has a mechanical problem, there are adequate reserves.

The Russian Bears may be old - like the old B-52 they can carry large loads of stand off missiles. They were escorted by SU-35s - air superiority fighters - which, if carrying BVR R-77s, would be more than a match for the 22s particularity with the Beriev A-50 (Russian AWACS) to direct the missiles. I think only a few 22s have been fitted with AIM 260 missiles, but maybe not yet deployed.

So it was not overkill - even match at best.

One report dated 30 miles; this one said 20nm or 26 miles - still too close given the stand off missiles in service these days. Despite the relatively short distance between the border and US air space, those planes should have been waiting for the Russians - indicates to me that there is a problem with US ground radar not functioning correctly or poor USAF radar op training (gafers on facebook?).

One 22 does not carry enough missiles to take out the 2 squadrons, and certainly not before the 35s took it out. In any case it would not have been ‘seconds’.

Russia and China ARE working together when it benefits each doing so, how be it with one eye open....and the land and resources in Russia's East are currently being developed and populated.
