Police in the Delaware city of Rehoboth Beach issued their first citation for not wearing a mask on the boardwalk against a Lancaster [PA] man.
According to a statement from Rehoboth Beach Police Public Information Officer Lt. Jaime Riddle, Delaware has opened beaches and boardwalks as of May 22, but with the regulation that face masks are required to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Despite that, police encountered a defiant lack of compliance on Monday from a 56-year-old Lancaster man, Riddle said. Because the encounter was widely circulated on social media, the department received many requests for comment.
Riddle explained that at 12:30 p.m. Monday, a seasonal cadet standing at the Delaware Avenue entrance to the boardwalk saw a man approaching without a mask.
The cadet told the man, who had not been identified to police at the time, that he was required to wear a mask on the boardwalk, Riddle said. The man told the cadet he would have to follow him and make him, Riddle wrote.
The officer attempted to stop the man but he refused and walked away onto the beach. The cadet then talked with others who witnessed the exchange and were upset and yelling at the man for not wearing a mask.
A full-time officer arrived and accompanied the cadet to the beach where they found the man and asked for his identification, Riddle said. The man claimed he did not have it with him, then gave officers a false name and state of residency.
The man continued to refuse to give any further information, despite several warnings, and police detained him, Riddle said.
For the next hour and through various efforts, police worked with the man who eventually provided his information to the officers and was given a civil citation and a mask, Riddle said.
The man was not identified in Riddles statement.
Lots of great restaurants in Rehoboth, and Cultured Pearl is one of them. As for bars, if I venture in there from Dewey, it’s the American Legion or the VFW.
Blue Lives used to matter.
I quit going to DE beaches in 93.
We go to the Jersey Shore, specifically Avalon.
Went to va beach boardwalk on Saturday and walked past many thousands of people. It was rare to pass someone who had a mask covering their face.
What a flip—Virginia is a free state and Delaware is not.
If the masks work why are we social distancing? And if social distancing works why are we wearing masks?
Rehobeth is very gay....
