Weekly Garden Thread - June 6-12, 2020
June 6, 2020 | Diana in Wisconsin/Greeneyes

Posted on 06/06/2020 6:08:49 AM PDT by Diana in Wisconsin

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

Our pepper plants are looking great with golf ball size fruit showing.
Tomatoes are producing blossoms but the little fruit looks puny...

My wife is out of the hospital so I have time to look after my peppers. I also bought a Moringa tree. It's a spindly, ugly looking thing with growth at the top and nowhere else but I'm hoping that it will start sprouting elsewhere now that it's in a bigger pot.

You know how you always see that image of the view from our terrace with the nice green hill in front. He'res that view from a different angle so you can see what that hill is hiding. Those houses on the back side are called the Fisherman's huts, where they relocated all of the people who used to live on the beach so they could use it for tourist development. There are no roads. You either have to come in from the bottom and walk up or the top and walk down, and it's 300 steep steps. A lot of those people aren't exactly spring chickens any more so it's quite the sight to see little old ladies lugging their groceries up those stairs. mt1

Good morning! My snow peas are starting to bear. Spinach fizzled. It got too hot, too fast, and it bolted. Will plant more in late summer going into fall. Today I want to plant squash and green beans. I think it’s safe now. (Michigan state line) Even though it got down to 40 one night this week. Hope everyone’s stuff is growing!!

Speaking of ‘thyme’, it’s one of my favorite herbs. I found a German Thyme plant at Lowe’s (only had two left, one was sickly, I got the good one!) after looking at several places that had none. It’s doing great in my old stock tank planter and I have a recipe this weekend that calls for fresh thyme - yay!

T-storms last night with almost an inch of rain over 2 hours or so. I didn’t water the garden last night, hoping we’d get something, figured I’d be out watering this morning if the storms passed us by.

Should have planted radish seeds yesterday evening, since we got rain. I’ve had one crop - pulled the last ones two days ago. My folks love radishes in salads and I found two recipes I want to try so there’s a reason to replant - I’ll put links below.

Zinnias are showing some buds - yay! Can’t wait for flowers. The hummingbird feeder looks like a big city airport on a busy day - getting visits every 5 minutes or so. There are several pairs because the males are occasionally “buzzing” each other on the feeder. My DIY ant moat is working like a charm - NO ants since I installed it. I cleaned the feeder/changed nectar Monday night & they’re really working their way through it. The feeder has perches (my old one did not) & they are landing & spending a bit of time, fueling up. Fun to watch!

Anyone got any advice about cutworms? They’re getting all my peas and beans. I never had such a bad year with them.

Briggs Nursery was kind enough to let me move around all of their pots after a rainstorm and videotape. 1993. The original music video has just been upgraded from the original 1993 videotape. The song was one my mother sang to me when I was a child. Mary, the Rose of Tralee.

If you plant starts in the ground, plant them right next to little sticks like from a disposable wooden skewer shishkebab stick. They try to bite on that and give up.

All my new baby asparagus are up!

YEA!

My tomato seedlings are huge and will go in once this line of storms passes.

Beautiful!

I stayed at a place in Acapulco years ago. The hotel was so high on the hill it had an outside elevator you could use, and also a little tram car.

Both were equally terrifying to ride!

I checked my strawberries yesterday and they're heavy on the plants and just beginning to turn red. Where I could, I lifted them off the pebbles that cover the soil and threaded them back into the plant. Those that sit on the ground seem to develop sculptural anomalies, though I assume there are a lot of happy critters patting their tummies. Unfortunately, the plants grow all through what USED to be the paths between the raised beds in the area, so trying to harvest is taking your life in your hands tiptoeing between plants.

And then the wild raspberries began taking hold. And I LOVE raspberries, so I let them grow among the strawberries. So this year I think I'd better harvest in a heavy raincoat and just feel happy for the little ones that share our crop.

There are THREE raised beds in the herb garden, but the back right one is so overgrown you can't even see the stones that raise it up.
