At least one player thinks there won't be a 2020 MLB season as players and owners dispute over money.
Jon Heyman of MLB Network discussed a recent call between the league and the players association Thursday on Ordway, Merloni & Fauria (via Ryan Hannable of WEEI), relaying a message from someone involved.
"The call was last night. I was getting texts. I got a text from a playerand I think they are going to get a deal, I think they are going to work it out. I can't believe they are going to blow it up over economics. But, from a very smart player, he said to me ... 'On call now. I think the chances for a season are pretty close to zero.' That was the entire text," Heyman said.
"It's not going well, I will say that," Heyman added. "I am taking a step back. He is in the middle of it. Taking a step back, I believe both sides understand they need to play the games if they can in terms of their health. They cannot blow it up over money. They just cannot do it."
The 2020 season was initially delayed because of the coronavirus pandemic, but owners have approved a proposal for a July start with each team playing 82 games.
The holdup has been due to the financial concerns of playing games without fans in attendance.

I don’t know terms of contracts and all but players get paid anyway right, even if nothing is played? Are their contracts valid still for their 2020 pay? So its the owners who are taking a bath now?
The virus. I think many would have handled this whole thing much differently if given the chance. The country has been nuked! Most of the virus was nefarious to economically ravage the nation.
“Well, its tough to pay people if you dont have the revenue. “
Discussion points are now money and number of games. There will be a season; this will probably be decided on/by 6/2. In answer to your point - TV, TV, TV!
Phillies bump
Yes, lack of that has always been a major shortcoming of FR.
NASCAR is back and running. Bundesliga soccer is also kicking around now. NHL and NBA playoffs will likely displace the boys of summer this year. NFL seems to have missed the rona bullet so far.
I think guaranteed wages is far more common in the NBA. Maybe one of the reasons they were the first to cancel games which started an avalanche of canceled events. I dont think its as wide spread in MLB.
I have a friend whose nephew is a bench utility player in MLB. The scuttlebutt I have is that a big factor in all of this is that a whole lot of MLB players are married to Karens who are convinced they’re all gonna die unless they can take the field in NASA space suits.
Well there’s the wild card in all of this, the players wives.
I can just imagine some of those conversations between players and wives. And give the ages of everyone involved, I’m sure many of the players have toddlers and small children at home. You can just imagine that they are afraid that the husband goes to the ballpark and he’s going to bring the virus home.
The MLB is not only going to seriously hurt the sport, but it could seriously hurt many Regional Sports Networks (RSN’s) in general because those RSN’s are closely tied to MLB teams.
Lots of Minor League Cuts (guys that would have likely been cut over the course of this season anyway)
So far my cousin in the Mets system is still listed on the roster.
Wild idea, let fans go to games.
the stupid players are going to blow this ....not that I care....Mariners have been awful since the Lou days...
no they’re afraid they’re husband are NOT going to the ball park and won’t get paid...
Good for him! A lot of talent available.
