SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) A local woman and her brother say theyre thankful to be okay after a turtle smashed into their windshield.
Latonya Lark and Kevin Grant were out running errands around noon on May 12. While riding northbound on Harry S. Truman Parkway near Montgomery Cross Road, Lark noticed something strange coming at them.
I thought it was a brick, and I told [my brother], my God, theres a brick! said Lark, who was driving. She says she started to slow down her vehicle.
Before Grant had time to process what was happening from the passenger seat, they both heard what they described as a loud boom, and Grant was covered in shattered glass.
A turtle burst through the windshield on the passenger side, right before Grants eyes.
When the glass broke, the first thing that came to my mind was just to shield myself, so it was just like, you know, turn and just cover, the licensed cosmetologist told WSAV News 3. He says he was left with small cuts after the incident.
Lark says the turtle had somehow smashed its way through her windshield after another car possibly struck it.
She and her brother believe the impact from a vehicle in front of them sent the turtle flying right back into their faces.
Grant did his best to calm his sister down and urge her to pull over and call for help.
The Chatham County Police Department responded. A spokesperson tells WSAV News 3 that how or why the turtle wound up airborne is undetermined.
The police report shows Larks windshield was left with too much damage to be able to drive safely, and the vehicle had to be towed
Even the police officer said if that glass wasnt as thick as it was and I didnt slow down the way I did when I saw the object coming, it wouldve been disastrous, Lark said.
The responding officers were able to remove the turtle safely. Lark says the turtle lost one of his legs in the freak accident.
It initially survived, and officers wrapped the reptile in a blanket. It was later taken to Savannah Animal Care for medical treatment.
The turtle got cited, but of course he didnt have insurance and he couldnt get a lawyer, so I wound up having to pay a deductible and everything else, Lark said.
Her windshield has since been replaced. Reflecting back on what happened, the siblings say it shows that the unexpected can happen without a moments notice.
If people are not paying attention to the road you know, whoever hit that turtle, they had to have been flying, Lark said.
She says after calling to check on the turtles health status on May 26, she learned that the turtle unfortunately did not make it after losing too much blood.
I didn’t see a cause in the article (It’s late-night) but the turtle could have been picked up by mini-tornado that tracked over a pond. If that happens the tornado will suck up the water in the pond along with the fish and —— turtles. As the tornado deteriorates the fish and things will fall out of the clouds
That is the origin of the old myth about it raining fish
More than likely the poor thing was ran over on its edge making it skip out airborne at high speed.
When Turtles Fly.... errr, wait a minute!
Years ago, a good friend, an avid bicyclist, told me about riding in rural CA when a buzzard took off in front of him and then vomited all over him as he went past.
yuck- that musta stunk after the bird no doubt just ate rancid rotten flesh
Do you remember when a goose hit Fabio in the face while on a roller coaster?

I had the hood of my car open up and smash the windshield. To make matters worse I had to drive like that to get off the freeway.
.............................................
Happened to me @ 65 mph in my then brand new ‘67 Ford Galaxy, on the Pennsylvania Turn Pike, I managed to pull over, tie down the hood and drive home carefully and changed my pants.
Turtlenado!
Those flying turtles again!
In 455 BC, Aeschylus, the great playwriter known as the Father of Greek Tragedy, died in a most unexpected way. He was said to have been killed by a tortoise which was dropped by an eagle that had mistaken his head for a rock suitable for shattering the shell of the reptile.
Turtleywinks.
Old Texas saying: If you see a turtle on a fence post, you can be sure it didn’t get there by itself.
