University of California Will Stop Using SAT, ACT

Admissions tests, allegedly biased against minority students, will be phased out over five years

The University of California board of regents voted Thursday to stop using the SAT and ACT college admissions exams, reshaping college admissions in one of the largest and most prestigious university systems in the country and dealing a significant blow to the multibillion-dollar college admission testing industry.

The unanimous 23-to-0 vote ratified a proposal put forward last month by UC President Janet Napolitano to phase out the exams over the next five years until the sprawling UC system can develop its own test.

The battle against standardized tests has raged for years because minority students score, on average, lower than their white classmates. Advocates argue that the exams are an unfair admission barrier to those students because they often cannot pay for pricey test preparation.

“The test is a proxy for privilege,” said Regent Cecilia Estolano. “It’s time, it has been studied to death.”

"Clearly the browns and blacks can not compete intellectually."

It's the AMERICAN browns and blacks who can't compete because we keep dumbing-down the system instead of insisting on excellence, and because American educators keep giving blacks and browns excuses to fail. "Brown" students from India do just fine.

Eventually there won’t be requirements for anything.

Is this a great country or what? Where everyone can be a brain surgeon whether you are qualified or not..

Very sad news. We are in CA, and all three of my boys score MUCH better on their SATs than their GPAs would indicate. They are a little lazy in high school, but then in college study what they want to instead of what they are forced to, and then do really well.

It’s telling that UK colleges (my oldest went to one) ignore US grades and ONLY want their SAT scores, AP test scores, and SAT subject test scores.

Sad day in CA (US) history—and a UC degree will likely become devalued over time I predict.

When the assumption is that everybody must go to college, then the tests are a barrier.

When people accept that not everyone is "college material," then either 1) the issue goes away, or 2) calling someone "not college material" is racist.

However, nobody says it's bigoted to say one is not NFL material (unless you're either Tim Tebow or Colin Kaepernick).

Nobody says its bigoted to say someone is not "star material" when they don't get a TV or record album contract.

It's only college goers who get this treatment, when many people would be better served going to a trade school instead.

I don’t remember any pricey test preparations. I guess I missed out too.

This regent is involved in all sorts of issues and sadly, she and others like her will determine the future of ‘higher’ education in California for decades, if the state should survive that long, that is.

There are alternatives to what this board will do,, and most likely, they will do the wrong thing without flinching.

They have been dumbing down this test for decades and it still hasn’t given the the results they want, i.e. equal performance for blacks and Latinos, so it must go.

They have gradually made it less and less of a pure intelligence test, so much so that Mensa does not recognize it for membership anymore.

I remember buying the Barron's Study Guides and test preparation books for the LSAT, the SAT, and the GMAT.

Who knew 2+2=4 was a sign of privilege.

That's the problem. We live in a land where the kids believe 2 + 2 = 5.

Wait a minute, school is free. If the school does its job, and the students do theirs, "pricey test preparation" is unnecessary. If you need "pricey test preparation", you probably don't belong in college anyway.

RE: my sister..... Democrat in training?

Are you the new Carnac the Magnificent?

My sister has been a lifelong Dem and proudly takes welfare and other entitlements in Massachusetts. Since around 1975. She's 70. Worked part time a few weeks to get back on benefits and impatiently waited for a declaration of distressed job region so she could get more money each year. Then has used disability to keep on the gravy train.

Told me she broke into tears several times a day for about three days "after Hillary lost and that means I won't get to see woman president in my lifetime." More sobs.

Here are some real Carnac jokes:

A: The ZIP Code.

Q: What do CIA agents have to remember to go to the bathroom?

A: A, B, C, D, E, F, G.

Q: What were some of the earlier forms of Preparation H?

A: Clean air, a virgin and a gas station open on Sunday.

Q: Name three things you won't find in Los Angeles.

“The test is a proxy for privilege,” said Regent Cecilia Estolano.

Thus endeth the prestige of the University of California system. I know there are a lot of loons at Berkeley, but at one time there were also a heckuva lot of Nobel prize winners. A great Physics school (led by Robert Oppenheimer at one time), a very good law school, and fine engineering programs too. So what exactly is California going to use as criteria for entrance to Berkeley /UCLA / UCSD / UCSB?

Amazing how Indian kids are doing so well on the SAT and other standardized texts.

It's a mystery!

Baloney.
The SAT and ACT questions are based on what the kids were taught in grades K-12.
There are numerous review materials available for free for those with sense enough to look for them.
The kids claiming “bias” are simply admitting they weren’t paying attention & never learned the material in the first place, so reviewing (refreshing their memory) won’t help them. If they never learned it, how could they remember & review it?
Those “privileged” kids paying the big bucks are admitting they didn’t pay enough attention either, so now they’ve gotta take crash courses & hire tutors to hurry up & study.

FWIW, I flew thru both tests without studying for either. It was all just basic stuff we’d learned in class, with certain parts of the tests focussing on *applying* what we’d learned. If for example youve no clue what the pythagorean theorem is, you won’t know when it applies & when it doesn’t.
The parts of the test I guessed at were subject matter where I knew I had goofed off. I took a stab at it anyway & did ok, but not as well as I could have.

Man I'm losing it. Is she a Clinton-ista or an Obama-ite? Either way, these people just keep working to destroy the country.
