Brand-new, nuclear powered, capable of carrying twice as many aircraft as most competing foreign carriers, and protected by an entire task force... the $6.2 billion USS Ronald Reagan seemed invincible leading up to an international war game exercise in 2005. It was a stunning blow then, and a complete shock, when - against all odds - a super stealth submarine from Sweden snuck past the USS Ronald Regan’s defenses and scored enough mock torpedo hits to sink it during *multiple* attack runs. The Americans never saw it coming… and never saw it leave…

The story I heard (and from what I take to be a reliable source) a U.S. unit that was engaged in tactical evaluation testing against a an Air Force "aggressor" unit. They mounted unauthorized automobile radar detectors as threat warning receivers to give themselves an edge. Not necessarily a great idea in combat. For one thing, cheap threat warning receivers suffer LO leakage that an enemy can exploit. That kind of modification would not remain secret for long, and the enemy would change frequencies or waveforms making the modification a liability.
There are hazards associated with mounting unauthorized electronics, like fire, electrical shorts, and crash worthiness.
IIRC, the sub uses fuel cells to generate electricity and is ultra quiet as there is no steam flowing through pipes and valves and turbines to make noise.
Excellent defense system. The folks on the Ronald Reagan could not see the forest (the sub) for the trees (hot chicks)
“Sweden can hide their sub but they can´t hide Sweden.”
BINGO!
Unless their first virtual torpedo volley was adjudicated undodgeable and sufficient to sink her I doubt the outcome. Theyd certainly notice fish in the water, especially any that hit! And then their behavior would have changed.
What’s worse is that the sub was put together over a weekend using a kit from IKEA. They were guided by the guy who wrote the instruction manual.
I would think modern jets come equipped with far superior radar detection systems than an automotive radar detector.
That’s the whole point. Electronic warfare is a subtle and well developed art. Amateur improvisation may work occasionally, but it’s more likely to get someone killed.
The Swedes put gals on their subs too? Do they drop the standards as well to allow them in and assign class quotas for graduation?
Well, if the submarine hadn’t turned on its GPS transmitter, how were we supposed to detect it?

I don’t see automotive radar detectors working even once. They simply cannot match the detection sensitivity that purpose built equipment can manage.
Almost certainly they have. Anything mechanical generates noise. Subs with AIP propulsion are incredibly quiet but not impossible to find, if you know what you’re looking for and where on the noise spectrum to look. The U.S. Navy learned a lot from these exercises, which is why they kept the sub around for so long.
