So I made a few simple changes to the Registry, and this laptop is now running like an Olympics 100 meters winner. All it did was disable the real-time running of Windows Defender. I can still use it for a virus scan.

Once you have a virus, it may be too late for a scan - many will disable the antivirus app as one of the first 'orders of business".

What you did is akin to keeping a bullet proof vest in your trunk in case you ever get shot.
