A couple camping southwest of Colorado Springs got a rude awakening when a bear started to rustle through their campsite, causing a commotion by knocking over a stove and plates. However, what happened next was far more invasive.
According to a report from Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW), the bear reared up and placed its paws on the couples tent. The bear then fell forward onto the tent, causing it to collapse. The incident happened at 1:30 AM Monday morning at the Golden Eagle Campground off of Highway 115.
After the tent collapsed, the bear retreated a bit before turning and huffing at the couple. The couple was then able to scare off the curious bear by shouting and starting their car alarm.
While the woman reported that she was scratched on the head by the bear, no injury was visible when the report of the event was filed on Monday. The tents rainfly was damaged, but not the tent itself.
By the descriptions of the bear and by studying its footprints, it appears to be a juvenile bear, CPW Officer Aaron Berscheid said. Its behavior sounds more as if it was just curious rather than aggressive. There were no food attractants at the campsite. I think it was just a curious young bear.

I live 7 miles from the nearest small town. I have one neighbor my mother-in-law about 125 yards from me and we allow a mutual friend to hunt on the 200 or so acres we own, no one else. Its turkey season here and he was set up in his blind last week and heard something coming through the woods toward him.
In a few minutes he saw a black bear he estimated to be in the 275-300lbs range and it headed straight towards him. He carries an old break top single shot .10gauge shotgun for hunting turkeys. He was loaded with a heavy round for turkey and was preparing to defend himself. The bear closed to 20 yards and stopped suddenly, looking at him and sniffing. He had decided if it took another step toward him to engage the beast. Fortunately it sniffed, looked at him and grunted loudly and ran off in the opposite direction. My wife was out walking her German Shepard yesterday and took a picture of a scat pile on part of the cleated property which was big and bear, so hes still about. Keeping my .44 Virginian Dragoon with heavy hunting rounds close when out and about and a .12 gauge mossy 500 with 2 rds of 8 shot to sting and 2 slugs at the end of the line in case he charges.
Stove = Bear Magnet
A few years ago, my sister in law was leading a middle school aged girls backpack trek with another experienced woman.
A young bear wandered into their camp and nosed around. The young girls were very scared because the bear wouldn’t leave. They were making noise and even throwing things at it.
The bear destroyed my SIL’s tent and ate two brand new $80 air mattresses. My brother was kind of mad about that.
He called the manufacturer to see if they would help him out. They laughed and gave him a sweetheart deal on replacements. They are said to be pretty flexible when it comes to bears.
Please add me to the Ping list too.
Smart.
Was up in the Boundary Waters of Minnesota and had my pack hanging up high on a rope between two trees. Not high enough! Luckily I heard the commotion and scared it off before it did too much damage. Ripped a hole in the pack and some stuff fell out but that was it.
I mentioned it to another canoeist the next day to watch out for them. He told me to stuff the pack up under the seat of the canoe and tie it in. Then turn the canoe over. The bear will make enough noise trying to tip the canoe over and you can chase it away. He said it was really difficult to get a pack up in the air high enough.
Of course for the next two weeks doing that, never had any bears come by! I think they hung out near the populated areas with numerous camp sites where I was at on my first night.
wow....
“Nice calm sunny day on the bay and she didnt respect she was in an outgoing tide.”
I don’t get it. If she had a kayak, why did she drown?
The couple were stupid for entering the wilds and keeping food in their tent.
All food, toiletries and odorous stuff should have been suspended out of bear range in a bear bag. Bear bags are fundamental.
Mom and dad spent the next three days driving the logging trails trying to find them to no avail. On the third day, they drove into the teeny little town about 3 miles away to have supper in the bar. They knew the bar owner and when they got inside, they found the two dogs sleeping behind the bar.
The dogs had wandered into the town so the owner brought them in and fed them. Evidently they had quite an adventure since both of them smelled of skunk spray and the shepherd had porcupine quills in his face..........LOL!
Several years ago our dog cornered a skunk and got a good spraying.
I had heard about tomato juice but didn’t have any. But I did have ketchup!
We lived on a river bank. I put on rubber gloves and rubbed a bottle of ketchup on him. Then through him in the swift -flowing river. He came back for more. I did it three times.
Worked pretty good!
Although if anyone had seen me throwing what looked like a bloody dog in the river, they may have contacted authorities.
There is breaking surf at the mouth of the bay. You are violently ripped from your small boat when you get in it. She may not have been wearing her PFD (Personal Floatation Device) (or not had it on tight enough as it was found on the beach with the kayak).
She may have had a Type III PFD, which is commonly warn by paddlers. This type is for calmer waters where you can be quickly rescued.
That’s interesting. Is the top partially open for the birds to get in? Do they go in?
Yes, black bears are unpredictable.
Ha ha.
That poor shepherd. Those porkypine quills are hooked like knitting needles and can be a real bugger to remove. LOL
Ketchup? LOL That’s a new one.
The article says no food attractants were at the campsite
Great pics
