Just 40% of Americans Will Return to Movies or Concerts Before Vaccine, Reuters Poll Says

Fewer than half of Americans plan to go to concerts, movies, sports events and amusement parks when they reopen to the public until there is a proven coronavirus vaccine, according to a Reuters/Ipsos opinion poll released on Tuesday.

The Reuters/Ipsos poll surveyed 4,429 American adults from April 15 to 21, asking about their previous attendance at sports events and live concerts and their interest in attending if they reopened before a coronavirus vaccine is available. The poll questions noted a vaccine might not be available for more than a year.

About four in 10 people who follow sports avidly and go to arts and entertainment venues and amusement parks said they would do so again if they reopened before a vaccine was available, according to the poll. Another four in 10 said they were willing to wait, even if it takes more than a year to develop a vaccine. The rest said they either “don’t know” what to do or may never attend those events again.

The United States leads the world with almost 1 million coronavirus infections and more than 56,000 deaths as of late Monday. Scientists project that a vaccine will not be on the market for 18 months.

Sporting events fared worst in the poll, with just 17% of American adults saying they would attend when they are reopened to the public, while 26% said they would rather wait for a vaccine.

However, the numbers were much higher among people who had actually attended a professional sporting event in the past year, with 42% said they would return whenever sports reopens to the public and 39% saying they would rather wait for a vaccine.

The poll showed that only 27% of those questioned would go to a movie theater, concert or live theater performance when venues reopen. Thirty-two percent said they would wait for a vaccine before going back to the movies, theater or concerts. In all, 55% of Americans said those events should not resume before a vaccine is available, although movie theaters in some states are already planning on reopening next month.

While a further breakdown was not posted, like sporting events, presumably the percentages are higher among Americans who had actually attended films or concerts in the past year.

Along with sports, theme and amusement parks posted grim numbers. Fifty-nine percent of respondents said they should not reopen until a vaccine is available, while just 20% said they would visit a theme park when they reopen.

Universal Studios has extended its closures in California and Florida until the end of May, while Disneyland and Walt Disney World are closed indefinitely.

All my liberal friends are happy with the lockdown and want it to last “as long as it needs to”.

What is their reason for wanting that? Really?

Far more concerned about (mandatory) vaccine than theater.

Probably not even 40% of Americans go to the movies or concerts... Yes, the question was asked incorrectly. I never go to movies or concerts, but I OFTEN go to (or used to) restaurants, parks, wineries, and other crowded places. I plan to resume when reopened. And I plan to visit Disneyland this summer if and when it reopens. And even go on my nasty dirty virus-laden subway (BART) when advised by my employer to return to the office to work in SF. And I also even plan to go on a cruise in the next couple of years.

What a coincidence 40% is about the number of hard core rats.

Proof that all of the MSM’s fear mongering has worked.

___

Yep, agreed. I am sure they didn’t ask them “would you be more confident if you got symptoms that you could get tested at Walgreens or CVS, or get a medicine remedy through Teladoc?”

Right on queue. A poll to try and convince people of “the truth”.

I won’t be back until the product improves significantly. A reimagined remake of a remake of a badly done original is not worth the price.

I’m currently taking care of my Mom, so I have to be careful, even of a plain old cold or flu. If that weren’t the case, I’d be inclined to actually brave a trip to Disney World. Can you imagine being there at only 30% capacity and not having to wait in two hour lines for everything? I’m personally not afraid of catching the beer flu. Even at 50, it’s 99% or more likely I’d be OK. I’d just hole up in my nerd cave until I get better, then I’d be over the Beer Flu BS.

>>I’m missing the Dobbie Bros 50th reunion concert in late July. I’d go to the concert.

I wonder how many of these tours will carry on next year.

A number of musicians have retired from touring (arthritis, vocal problems, etc).

Paul McCartney’s voice cracks now. It’s happened to Roger Daltry and postponed their 2019 Who tour to 2020 and now 2021.

The window of opportunity is slipping by. And stages and ticket money will be scarce when things do open up again (can only physically book so many bands in a week even if every venues is having shows head to head).

Just looking at my state of Florida, things are mostly not shut down, and they have not been for a good while, at least up here in the NW. I don’t know what’s going on in South FL.

We have 13 deaths in Escambia County and 8 in Santa Rosa County, and people in both counties have been mostly proceeding with life as normal, aside from restaurants being mostly take out and schools not being open.

I can’t see destroying the economy, businesses, livelihoods and lives over that.

Some places being hard it, I can understand some measures being taken, but blanket measures? No way. Every place is not the same.

“Probably not even 40% of Americans go to the movies or concerts...”

Extremely rare for me, even if my GF threatens me. AND I work in Hollywood. And if I did go, I would go on the 6th week so there are less aholes in the theater..

Athletes too are losing their skill as they grow older and untested.

They may be training at home in their personal gyms but no spring training, no drive.

And what is the bill to the public going to be when the cities experience a revenue shortfall from lost hotel revenue, traffic ticket revenue, and money from vacated sports franchises?

History has shown that propaganda works.. at least in the short term. But once the first few concerts, movies and ballgames restart, they’ll cast aside their worries. Americans are primarily followers.. they go where the crowd is.

Aren’t we just starting to open up right now?

Shouldn’t you also have given your news flash to President Trump as he leads the nation including the doctors you are talking about and making recommendations to the states as to how to open?

By the way the articles indicated that Denmark has done a slow and partial reopening and not a full blown opening as you suggested.

BS. Nobody goes to the movies. With a virus, without a virus, with lots of money and without money. TV’s are 100 inch, everything ever filmed...ever, is available at a moments notice at home.

Screw Hollywood. Only movies I’ve gone to in the past 5 years are “1917” and “Dunkirk”. Both worth seeing at the theater.

Re: a proven coronavirus vaccine

No such thing, as of today.

It mutates much too fast.

The exact virus that killed all the people in metro New York City will not even exist a year from now.

In fact, the virus in NYC right now is probably not the same virus in the West Coast states.

The death toll on the West Coast is a small fraction of the death toll in NYC.

Yes, they are scared and have bought in the whole MSM propaganda lock stock and barrel. They all think our gov (Kate Brown) is doing a fantastic job keeping us locked in.
