Weekly Garden Thread - May 2-8, 2020
May 2, 2020 | Diana in Wisconsin/Greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

I haven’t made that sound, but I admit to shaking the packages and giggling when they rattle :)

Yes, but it was the results of two of us (me and my then-MIL) picking 8 hours a day for 6 days, then going to the market on the 7th day!

I’m just glad Big John (my then-FIL) took out the strawberries and went with raspberries by the time I joined the family. Strawberry picking is ridiculously hard work.

He had the raspberry canes tied up, so you could stand and talk across the row from one another and pick. :)

It will be Lilac Time around here in another week or so. These pictures are from last year, but I'm expecting more of the same this season.

'Monge' Lilac

'Beauty of Moscow' Lilac

'Monge' and your basic 'Chinese' Lilac

I almost finished the 24x4 foot garden bed today... damn grip gave out from driving decking screws into a series of plastic/composite 2x4s.

Fingers started cramping up. I have 40 more 10”x 5.25” cedar slats to screw to the 2x4s which makes up the sides of the raised bed.

At one point I was so tired, I thought about moving some of the garden soil aside, layig down in the hole and dragging the soil back over me with my hands.

But then I remembered I had a single iced cold beer (can of Bohdizafa) in my fridge and I found the will to go on.

Tomorrow is my Bday and I will be 52.

I wiah my parents were alive to call me and say Happy Birthday....:(

Do ghost peppers keep away pests? Which kind of pests? Bugs, raccoons, in-laws?

I am planting a beautiful, blue, Hydrangea right adjacent to my seating area that overlooks my garden.

It was my mom’s favorite flower/plant.....I even had the image of one etched into her grave marker along with a needle and thread “stitching” along rhe edge of the marker to remember her quilting and crafting by.

I’m what you call “a good son.”

Anything that makes the mistake of biting into one of the fruits, will tend to avoid that plant and everything around it for the rest of their life. Squirrels, mice, raccoons, whatever.
