Coronavirus: ‘Essential Workers’ To Walk Off The Job In Mass May Day Protest (Amazon, Whole Foods, Target, Instacart)

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) - May Day usually brings thousands of people to downtown Los Angeles for a march and protest for workers’ rights, but that won’t happen this year because of the coronavirus pandemic and social distancing.

Instead, essential workers of large corporations that have become vital lifelines during the pandemic will walk off the job to demand better health and safety conditions, along with hazard pay, on International Worker’s Day, which is observed around the world on May 1.

According to organizers, workers from Amazon, Whole Foods, Target and Instacart will call out sick or walk off the job during their lunch breaks Friday.

Christian Smalls, who was fired by Amazon after organizing a strike at the online retail giant’s Staten Island warehouse, posted the news release of Friday’s walkout/sickout on Twitter.

“Our companies have failed us during these unprecedented times,” the news release said. “At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic essential workers were subjected to exposure in our workplaces due to lack of PPE, flawed policies and dense safety guidelines. Because of the failings of our employers, many of our fellow employees have contracted this deadly virus and some have died.”

If they were laid off, they would be making about $20/hr depending on the state for doing nothing. This is thanks to the $600/wk bonus from the Feds.

May Day .... official Communist Party celebration in the Soviet Union. Now a major social-democrat-communist party protest day in the United States.

Some of those who decide to ‘just walk off the job’ are going to get fired and quickly replaced. Then, they’ll be talking about wrongful termination. Not quite.

However, if they are fired for walking out or refusing to come to work they collect nothing.

More proof this is a manufactured crisis as the communists continue to make their move.

I’m not too sure if that extra $600 was a wise decision. Yes it’s saving people from going into debt, but who is going to want to go back to work if they are pulling in $1000 a week in unemployment? $400 base plus $600 bonus. Sure people make more than that working but not everybody does and this goes on to July? Seems to me this was more a deliberate attempt to destroy the economy, a bribe to get people not to work.

I work in a hospital, and seen COVID first hand.
I could have quit and gone home, >65, who would blame me?
These people are just as necessary to
protect and maintain the welfare of the people

Whining about it really gets my goat...

If you’re essential, you’re not allowed to strike under federal law. That’s why police and fire fighters can only get away (barely) with sick-outs. We should do the same with public school teachers, if we don’t break the public unions altogether.

Use the war powers act to criminally prosecute “essential” workers denying people food and other critical services.

I agree, the $600 was a mistake for the country. I have to be careful with this because by daughter in law was laid off immediately after this started so she is getting the $600. She is an architect and her firm was struggling, so she was going to be let go anyway. The event has done in the firm as it has done in my son’s business who designs and builds net zero homes. So, they are living on that extra check, but it was a bad decision for the country.

A very short sighted strategy to say the least. Millions are out of jobs and you walk out.

And on Commie day.

People have long memories.
