Michigan's Frontline Caronavirus Workers Could Get Free College Tuition Under Governor's New Plan

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced Wednesday a plan to provide free college tuition for people working on the frontlines during the novel coronavirus pandemic.

Whitmer's "Futures for Frontliners" plan will provide those working on the frontlines - including hospital staff, grocery workers, and child care providers - with the opportunity to get either a college or a technical degree on the state's dime, if they do not already have one.

"The Futures for Frontliners program is our way of saying 'thank you' to those who have risked their lives on the frontlines of this crisis. This program will ensure tuition-free college opportunities and give these dedicated Michiganders an opportunity to earn a technical certificate, associate degree or even a bachelor's degree," the governor stated in a press release.

Whitmer echoed Peters' sentiments in her press release Wednesday, stating that ""No Michigander should have to worry about how to feed their family or pay rent during a crisis. And no Michigander should be scared to go to work."

no, i’m very tired of it too. Roll of the dice - jobs they chose and they know they will be dealing with such issues at times. Even the supermarket workers etc - it’s just their choice of job. Many of us have very vital jobs in various ways too, just governor’s shut us down.

not to mention all the higher wages healthcare workers already get and for them or other lesser paid “frontline” workers get overtime, bonus/hazard pay incentives etc etc etc which soldiers don’t get.

The Futures for Frontliners program is our way of saying 'thank you' to those who have risked their lives on the frontlines of this crisis.

I have a lot of respect for healthcare workers, especially First Responders.

My brother was a volunteer Emergency Medical Tech for a lot of years. The stuff he did, the stuff he saw and the stuff he put up with for no pay was incredible.

My wife is a Respiratory Therapy Technician and a Sleep Therapy Technician. (By the way my wife had her hours cut because she is not aloud to do anything)

I know how important these people are to extending peoples’ lives.

But, I was in the Emergency Room a couple of weeks ago with my grandson and the place was as empty as I have ever seen it. There were only two other people in the waiting room besides us.

Yes, this is anecdotal evidence but if this Pandemic is real that room should have at least been as chaotic as it is normally. It was dead!

Every time I have been to the ER in the past there were dozens of people waiting to be seen. This ER serves a population of about 100K and most of the Urgent Care centers in the area have been shutdown by the pandemic so it should be getting more business than usual.

This Pandemic is a Scamdemic. Where are all of the Dead People? Where are all of the dying people?

I have the greatest respect for the people that serve but in that ER they looked bored.

That’s cool, just get all the people you put out of work to pay for it. Oh, wait ...

Hey wiseass. I am a retired nurse and a lot of my friends are “frontliners.” Your ignorant answer is repulsive

I certainly hope she’s spend only state money on this. Gonna be real pissed if it turns out she’s somehow managed to use federal taxpayer money for this progressive dream.

A rat is a rat is a rat. a backdoor subsidy to the colleges hidden behind “helping the our frontline workers” BS. The state may go broke but she uses the virus to push through taxpayer paid college tuition.
