Anil Subba, a Nepali Uber driver from Jackson Heights, Queens, died just hours after doctors at Elmhurst Hospital thought he might be strong enough to be removed from a ventilator.
In the nearby Corona neighborhood, Edison Forero, 44, a restaurant worker from Colombia, was still burning with fever when his housemate demanded he leave his rented room, he said.
Not far away in Jackson Heights, Raziah Begum, a widow and nanny from Bangladesh, worries she will be ill soon. Two of her three roommates already have the symptoms of Covid-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus. Everyone in the apartment is jobless, and they eat one meal a day, she said.
We are so hungry, but I am more terrified that I will get sick, said Ms. Begum, 53, who has diabetes and high blood pressure.

HEY NYC! Bob Dylan calls to YOU
“You used to laugh about
Everybody that was hanging out
Now you don’t talk so loud
Now you don’t seem so proud
About having to be scrounging your next meal. -
How does it feel???
“Like a Rolling Stone,”
Subway?
Bus station?
We know Uber is still running, although they're a driver short.
If things are this bad, they should lock this down so tight even Snake Plissken can't get out.
Clearly this needs a humane solution... Each of these wonderful people (and their friends) needs to be freed from this tragedy...
Anil Subba needs to be deported immediately, for humanitarian reasons, back to Nepal...
Edison Forero needs to be deported immediately, for humanitarian reasons, back to Columbia...
Raziah Begum and her friends need to be deported immediately, for humanitarian reasons, back to Bangladesh...
All of us might be able to sleep more soundly knowing that they are back home in countries that care for them...
“This story from The New York Times is doomsday porn designed to scare people as the death...”
Doom sells, big. Same for getting federal research grants.
For “the news”’today, every blizzard with be “The Blizzard of the Century”, every hurricane the end of the eastern seaboard, and every new bug the end of mankind.
That is what they, in their hearts, want — calamity, catastrophe, suffering, anarchy, death and destruction. That’s a progressive’s heart.
I live in Queens, and it’s actually a wonderful place with a great mix of urban and suburban neighborhoods, amazing restaurants, and hard working, unpretentious people...and it is only in some of the Hispanic neighborhoods where language integration is a problem....BTW, the Asian immigrants have the lowest rates for the virus of any demographic.... On the other hand, both New York City and New York State government are among the worst in the country, and the transit system is a mess.... Please don’t lump the people who live here together with the people who are running things.... The Republican party in New York is the worst, so it’s not like we have a good alternative
Why would someone from Nepal come here? If they do, they should be able to provide for themselves.
Only 145 people have died in Bangladesh of the coronavirus. She would have been safe if she had stayed home.
These people are worth more to New York DEAD ($39,000) than they are alive.
A bit exaggerated but not far from the truth. Beginning to think that these Democratic governors have made it nearly impossible for primary physicians to treat COVID-19 patients in a timely, inexpensive manner as outpatients because they figure the Federal government will more than cover the expensive hospital charges for inpatient care. They have blood on their hands.
The problem is ventilators are killing people who should have been on oxygen instead of a vent.
Perhaps another way to look at this is that people are put on a ventilator because the alternative is to watch them quickly die.
When I recovered enough after two days to be taken off a ventilator, I had a serious cut on my nose. Now there is a very visible scar across the tip of my nose. Nobody ever said a word about how I was thus injured. My assumption is that it happened during the rush to get air into me to prevent my immediate death.
“Willie Green hardest hit.”
ROFLMAO!
This is another downside of declaring yourself a sanctuary city. Many of these people would have failed the health exam at Ellis Island back when the USA had immigration standsrds.
And what do they all probably have in common-—
Anil Subba, ILLEGAL Nepali Uber driver from Jackson Heights,
Edison Forero, 44, ILLEGAL restaurant worker from Colombia
Raziah Begum, ILLEGAL widow and nanny from Bangladesh, worries she will be ill soon
and government inaction
. how can that be? Dont they all have (D) after their names? If the Times listed the names the list would start with Cuomo and deBlasio. Elections have consequences.
Anyone on a ventilator is lucky to see another year of life. Ventilators save few lives. Stay off them if possible.
“In the nearby Corona neighborhood,..”
Every neighborhood in New York is a corona neighborhood.
Queens has nice suburban areas...I agree. My family used to live in Queens.
