I retired 'bout 14 years ago and we moved to a small town in Texas. Met an older couple at the local mall and they got me into mall walking. Actually became very good friends with them and even went on several cruises together. But back to walking. I got into a solid routine of walking 2 miles a day in the mall five times a week. Seems like I've been doing it forever.
Well,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, the mall closed about 6 weeks ago give or take and I stopped walking. Don't know why but I never tried walking here in the retirement community which actually is a bit hilly. And the point of this entry is that over the last few weeks I have felt a noticeable change. Loss of energy, tired after doing yard work and a bit bit of flabbyness. So its obvious to me that walking really makes a difference in ones health. Besides other routines but the walking did/does make a difference.
So the mall is still closed but as I said we live in a bit of a hilly community and that is because the Guadalupe river is right below us. And the town has a wide sidewalk that runs for 4 or more miles along side of it. And... yes, I've had this first class bike for quite a long time and finally kicked my own butt. I'm trying to get into riding at least 4 times a week. We're located in the middle of the 4 miles so I ride out to one end and back which makes it a 4 mile ride. But I'll be back to walking when this crap is over.
“If one is really sick get to a doctor of hospital. Let the rest of society get on with its daily life...”
The problem with that is if you’re a carrier with no symptoms and don’t know it, or maybe you do and don’t care like Typhoid Mary. I worked with several people who were carriers of stress and spread it around even though they seemed asymptomatic.
But I don’t like the lock down either.
I walk out side in the fresh air. Try it, it could be catching
I believe you are not responsible for my health, I am. Likewise, I am not responsible for your health, you are. Take whatever measures you feel necessary and I will do the same. 243 1/2 years was a long time to be free.
The thing about mall walking is that there are people around to call 911 if a cardiac event or an accidental fall occurs. You should probably do your outdoor walks with at least 1 companion. And bring a mobile phone.
Yes, the biking does give one some fresh air.
We are all carriers of something. We are all risks to other people.
We don’t stop living.
If you happen to be one of those that are at a higher risk of succumbing to more serious infection, you protect yourself. Stop inflicting your weakness on those around you. Let them get on with their lives.
‘I walk out side in the fresh air. Try it, it could be catching’
trouble is, the weather in the Northeast has been atrocious this month...
“Take whatever measures you feel necessary...”
Whatever measures? So if someone is endangering the health and thus the life of others, the others can shoot dead that someone and burn the body and his house just to be sure. Cool. Except laws get in the way of the others doing that. Perhaps others want the same protection by the law.
The problem is where to draw the lines to maintain an acceptable balance between interests.
The problem with your statement is that it’s too broad.
Global warming, right?
I’ve seen a LOT of people out riding the crappy walmart bikes that have been sitting in the garage for ten years. It’s a start.
We dont stop living.

This is 100% spot-on. Some would see this as being "selfish" or 'irresponsible' or just harsh, but if we could put aside our collective emotional sensitivity and think more logically, we will understand that what is stated here is correct.
I am all for protecting the vulnerable, but there is a way to do so without completely destroying the economy and permanently relinquishing our freedom. We can certainly find a way to strike the proper balance. The pursuit of a 100% risk-free existence is a pipe-dream
We are only weakening our immune systems with this never-ending, unnecessary lock-down. Before people get into the simplistic, emotion-based, "lives vs. money" argument, it should be noted that if we enter a full-blown economic depression; everyone will suffer tremendously. Not just the tiny percentage of the population that we are allegedly trying to protect.
And we are making criminals out of people just wanting to live.
People wanting to start up their businesses.
People, like my neighbors yesterday, wanting to have a bday party for one of their children.

Those kinds of odds are no reason to screw up my life style and the same sentiments are held by the guys I would normally be playing softball with right now. But we can't since the park where we normally play is closed to ball playing....Walkers and bicyclists only.
If your place of work is closed down you have no choice other than to locate cash flow by changing your job working for those who are essential or accepting gov. funded stimulus and unemployment until your company calls you back. At which point your required to return... you will not be eligible for unemployment if you decline return.
Every business is handling these closings differently....one divided it's staff to working every other week (as an essential)but they are also paid for the week they aren't working. Others let all their staff go.
As for if or not to do your life otherwise daily is really up to you....if you get stopped by authorites so what, just continue as you are or find another place to do it.
I went shopping Friday and what I noted here was the public is getting out slowly, just as I expected it would once things began to open. The stores show less product than before because they haven't been ordering for weeks without a steady flow of customers. So it's not because the products aren't available. They just haven't been ordering as was relayed when I spoke to staff etc.
I do think though it's starting slow, once it gets past this things will break loose in a big way and we'll be hearing how stores are out of product and there's a food shortage, which there isn't.
Te complaining we heard at the beginning of this we'll be also hearing once things get really going. ......we are a seriously impatient nation of peoples who don't care or want to know why they can't have what they want when they want it.....Certain groups especially were fighting over food at McDonald's on a normal day.....that's not going to change once things open.
I walk and sometimes jog some right from my house. My first route was 1.5 miles out and the return for total of 3 miles. It was downhill going out and uphill coming back. I’m 71, by the way. I tried a different route from the house and discovered it was much less hilly though it’s 1.5 miles total. So I do it twice when I want 3 miles and once if I have time constraints, etc. I try walk 4-5 days a week. I also flyfish which involves a lot of walking and wading.
The more you move (within reason) the better you will feel, keep at it!
I’m sorry, I should have said “legal” measures for the benefit of morons and a-holes. I draw the line wherever someone’s fear infringes on another’s freedom.
“The problem with that is if youre a carrier with no symptoms and dont know it, or maybe you do and dont care like Typhoid Mary.”
If you use that criteria, we will all be quarantined forever.
If people are worried, they need to stay home. Which still might not work, things have to be delivered by someone.
I’m 71. I’m out most every day. But I distance myself from others. I’m fine so far, and I endanger no one except my wife, who does the same thing and is fine also.
Agreed. The Constitution is worthless if it’s put aside because America gets a fever.
