One out of every four American adults say someone in their household has lost a job to the coronavirus pandemic, but the vast majority expect those former jobs will return once the crisis passes, according to a new poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research.
The economic devastation writ by COVID-19 is clear: 26.4 million people have lost their job in the past five weeks, millions of homeowners are delaying mortgage payments and food banks are seeing lines of cars that stretch for miles. Forty-six percent of all Americans say their household has experienced some form of income loss from layoffs, reduced hours, unpaid leave or salary reductions.
And yet, the survey finds a majority of Americans still feel positive about their personal finances. One possible reason: Among those whose households have experienced a layoff, 78% believe those former jobs will definitely or probably return. Another positive sign: The percentage of workers who say their household has lost a source of income is not significantly different from a few weeks ago. [ ]
Overall, 52% of Americans say they approve of how President Donald Trump is handling the economy. Trumps overall approval rating stands at 42%. Even though 53% of Republicans said national economic conditions were poor, 88% of them approve of Trumps economic stewardship. Twenty-three percent of Democrats approve, even as 90% call the economy poor.

Most are stupid.
They are scared, a bit confused, and many are just enjoying not working. They don’t understand their employer is being killed by this. They just think that “they” will make them open.
An uneducated populace is the Democrat’s best friend.
I haven’t heard anything about the border for a while. I’d imagine with the unemployment, quarantine and the virus that numbers must be near zero. Having said that I can imagine their aren’t to many mules bring drugs in. Plus the fact that fentanyl from Chine to Mexico has probably slowed down too.
I wonder what all the opiate druggies are doing for their fix?
I think most people are unaware of the catastrophic carnage that is coming as a result of this. In a few months it will become apparent to everyone just how destructive this authoritarian rule has been for this country. It won’t be Pretty!
That's because they are clueless.
My boss told me my job will be there when we get back to normal.
I’m with ya! MOST don’t have a grasp of economics; their jobs don’t exist in a vacuum with no relationship to other sectors of the economy. Case in point, a friend of mine was laid off in a company that has a complete exemption. Reasons? Sources of raw materials from Europe and elsewhere have dried up, some have been re-directed elsewhere and there’s no demand from their primary customers, the automobile industry.
This poll could be correct and I think reflect the mainstream thinking towards this event.
I think most Americans have enough awareness to know that this was a new virus, so a new game plan had to come up. The trick is to stay on top of things, be prudent, alert and prepared to make difficult decisions. I think the president is doing a superb job, as always, towards this and it has instilled some confidence in people that this too shall pass. There was no underlying issue with the economy, so why wouldn’t fairness demand that people get their job back.
Hindsight is 20/20 but that’s not the game we should be playing like the left. I think a lot of our pundits on the right have played this the wrong way with the hindsight monologues. When you avoid something, you cannot ever prove what didn’t happen. I’m sure we will have “experts” on both sides of the issue haranguing us endless on why “it was the stupidest possible thing to do” or why “it was the only sensible course of action”.
Really, we will never actually know. But I am certain that we will be endlessly told about it by both sides.
I’m sick of it already.
