Bill and Melinda Gates purchase $43M luxury beach house in Del Mar, CA

The billionaire philanthropists Bill and Melinda Gates have purchased an exquisite beach house outside San Diego-splashing out on $43 million for an oceanfront mansion in the coastal town of Del Mar, CA. The prodigious purchase price makes it one of the largest sales in the area's history.

The luxurious six-bedroom, four-bathroom, 5,800-square-foot home was sold to the Gates family by Madeleine Pickens, a former wife of the billionaire oil baron T. Boone Pickens, according to the Wall Street Journal. The home originally landed on the market for $48 million in January 2019.

The oceanfront property was built by the architect and designer Ken Ronchetti in 1999. According to the listing details, the house is well-known as a city landmark and is considered "one of the most prominent coastal contemporary beach homes on the West Coast."

The elegant residence comes with 120 feet of private ocean frontage.

Wide windows throughout the living spaces open to the back patio, offering a seamless flow between the indoor and outdoor spaces. The large patio also provides awe-inspiring vistas of the Pacific Ocean.

120 feet of private ocean frontage.

That's nothing. Probably use it one weekend per year.

It’s his money?

Why the hell should we care?

Are we communists here now?

What does his politics or evil have to do with him buying what he wants?

Do we want his money confiscated for “the better good” now?

Are we AOC and bernie now.

Too much dam griping and whining like b.tches on this board and not enough action

For $43 million, I thought you’d get 1,000 feet of private beach, not just 120 feet.

Gates, 64, was recently back in the headlines in connection with a conspiracy theory claiming falsely that he was implicated in the spread of COVID-19.

While this has no basis in fact, the multibillionaire, who turned his attention to philanthropy a couple of decades ago, has donated $250 million toward fighting the virus.

“No basis in fact”.

No footnote, no disputing evidence, simply an uncorroborated statement of its own...

Here, even the real estate reporter feels the need to ‘check the record’ and take a sideswipe at Orange Man Bad. No doubt hoping for an invite to the house warming party...

It’s his money? ... Why the hell should we care?

Totally agree. But Gates is a global warming / oceans rising carper. Seems he wouldn’t spend $43 million on a soon-to-be-flooded oceanfront home. Unless he’s a hypocrite.

By my calculation, that works out to about $7,400.00 per square foot.

Detroit has some homes for sale at $24 per square foot, while San Francisco comes in at about $810.

Doesn’t look like much of a bargain.

Is there a multi millionaire leftist in this country who *doesn't* own an oceanfront mansion?

Under Prop 13, annual taxes will be $430,000 + another 10% or so of that amount for assessments. Of course, the taxes won’t go up much each year, again thanks to Prop 13 ... all chicken-feed to Bill and Melinda. Still, the local school districts must be salivating at getting their share. I’d love to know the purchase price of the place when the seller’s bought it ... that would be the old tax basis.

I was in California for a long time. As far as I can remember, the property tax is 1% of the selling price, therefore his property tax should be $430,000 a year. If he didn’t like $35,000, he REALLY ain’t gonna like California property taxes. I don’t know if there is any way for him to get out of it.

His property tax will be at least 500k per year. Unless he gets it classified some sort of historic property and gets some concession.
His Seattle mansion has a 500kw standby diesel generator. Wonder what kind of standby he will have in CA with all their power cuts. Can’t have the ice cream melting.

Psalm 73:8They are corrupt, and speak wickedly concerning oppression: they speak loftily.

9They set their mouth against the heavens, and their tongue walketh through the earth.

10Therefore his people return hither: and waters of a full cup are wrung out to them.

11And they say, How doth God know? and is there knowledge in the most High?

12Behold, these are the ungodly, who prosper in the world; they increase in riches.

So I guess Gates has that global climate change issue behind him? I thought the rising sea levels would have washed his dream house away?

What a piker. He could have bought the entire Pickens ranch in the Panhandle of Texas for a mere 250 million!

He wouldn’t survive a day in that environment.
