Churchill Downs announced April 23 that it will conduct a virtual running of the Kentucky Derby during a telecast on NBC on May 2 from 3-6 p.m. ET on the traditional day of the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1).

Called the "The Kentucky Derby: Triple Crown Showdown," the virtual race is a computer-simulated version of the American classic, which was postponed this year due to COVID-19 from its traditional running on the first Saturday in May until Sept. 5.

Will it be like the real Kentucky Derby broadcast: four hours of drunken idiots babbling about ugly hats interrupted by a two minute horse race? I like the competition of the race, but never has an event needed to be DVRed and watched later as much as the Derby.

Past 13 Derby winners. Will there be odds, can we bet? I’ll take Mine That Bird at 300/1.

I will check but the race is limited to the 13 Triple Crown winners and Mine That Bird is not one of those. Think Seattle Slew, American Pharoah, Secretariat, Affirmed, Whirlaway, Count Fleet and others.

The Arkansas Derby is that day from Oaklawn which is spectator-free. The track moved its premier race to replace the Kentucky Derby and some of those who run will be entered in the Kentucky Derby. Oaklawn is one of the best tracks in all North America.

Good grief! Do jockeys ever get within 6 feet of each other?

I'm a big horse racing fan.

The Derby has been POSTPONED to the beginning of September.

F**k everyone else who has a horse race scheduled for then! So what if Saratoga's big race for the same horses is schedule for one week earlier. Churchill Downs uber alles!

I hope they go down in flames.

just show past races liek Nascar, FI IROC etc are doing right now- it’s fun to watch old races- especially the more dramatic ones, which are the oens they have chosen to show- kinda cool watchign the old greats ripping aroudn the track back then-

From what source?

The 13 Triple Crown winners can be found here:

I would imagine online accounts will accept wagering but I haven’t seen anything yet. Twinspires.com may be one source. FanDuel could be another.

Aha, it's the name of a horse! That's where Allen Toussaint got the name for this classic instrumental:
