A police shooting at a crowded Walmart in San Leandro, California, fatally wounded a man brandishing a baseball bat. Graphic cellphone video of the officer-involved shooting, which circulated widely online, shows responding officers tasing suspect Steven Taylor, 33. He then refused to drop the bat and was shot, leaving a trail of blood on the floor as he stumbled away. Despite life-saving measures, Taylor died from his injuries at the scene. The use of deadly force is under investigation.

First shot likely justified but after he dropped the bat not so much.
I hesitate to second guess but the first shot may not have been necessary if there was some out of the box thinking. There were a bunch of shopping carts and if someone was threatening me with a bat and was unarmed, the cart would make a decent shield and weapon as needed.
Guess that's how you get a paid vacation...
They ordered him to back up...NOT drop the bat or get on the ground...
In the 2nd video you hear the first shot...The fella bends over kind of staggering forward and back...Definitely not too steady on his feet...He points the bat towards the floor and he gets shot again...We then see the blood...Don't know if it was from the first shot or second...
He drops the bat, slowly walks away...
They then shoot him in the back...He drops to the floor...They walk up to him and aim their guns at his prone, face down body...
Guy with a red jacket moves between the cops and the victim...We can't see it but we hear the final kill shot...Guess he was still breathing...
Could have easily taken the down with a shopping cart or brought him down from behind...
At the very least, those cops should be prohibited from every touching a gun again...
Shooting someone in the back and then on the ground
This isnt America anymore
I shot him because I came home from work and he was in my apartment. Of course, I didn't check to see if I was actually in my apartment, but I shot him anyway because I believed that my life was in danger.
I started to post above that I’ve known men who could’ve disarmed that man of his bat singlehandedly.
Too many to count.
Veteran of 20 years.
Did he leave a trail of bodies?
I don’t think so or they would have it headlined.
.
BAN BATS !!!!
.
Watching this video should not make you feel safe. It should make you sick to your stomach. More directly What in the hell is wrong with people who think this action is ok?
The police are trained thses days to “take charge” immediately which leads to tragedy.
The training needs to be changed.
I dont approve of the follow-up shots.
But threatening people with any weapon is a bad idea.
Indeed, the problem is that most folks think one can disarm and subdue another with a few quick strokes and steps, like they do in the movies- in reality, encounters usually last a few seconds, with one combatant incapacitated by a single strike. Even well trained martial artists cannot. That is why “God made man, Colonel Colt made them equal”.
Mano-a-mano is for friendly sparring or controlled pugilism, like boxing or MMA.
Close combat for keeps is often lethal or at least severely damaging to the loser within seconds.
Lethal force is lethal force- the application of unlawful force that is likely to be capable of grave bodily harm or death. A baseball bat at 5 feet IS a lethal weapon, even at 25 or 30 feet- unless the opposing combatant has firearm in hand at the outset. Tueller Drill and other tests pretty much prove that even an experienced person with a holstered firearms cannot likely react, decide draw and shoot to stop if the opponent attacks unimpeded from at least 21 feet- more likely the average person is at grave risk from an impact weapon or blade or bare hands from 50 feet, unless the attacker is of course, granny in a walker....
As to justification of defense for the policeman who fired, that is up to an investigation to decide, and they usually err in favor of the officer, which may or may not be the same standard applied to non-empowered civilians (AND YES, COPS ARE CIVILIANS, BY DEFINTION).
Umm. hmm.
Yep, and I tied my shoe laces to insure no failure there, then assessed my options, seeing a whisky bottle crate, I picked it up and allowed hi to swing at my head, blocking the stroke easily and then did a leg sweep and took him to the ground, as he fell, I quickly snapped my felixicuffs on him and poked him the nads for good measure....
Then, I pulled out my pack of camels, , unfiltered of course, snapped open the lighter and cupped the flame against the cold biting NYC East River wind, as a ship int eh distance blew its foghorn, and pulled a hot drag off the smoke. The coke head looked up at me, bewildered and began to speak, so I drew my Yonkers made Kimber and deliberately put a HiVel 180 ( my, my, how the flying ashtray shuts up perps), into his forehead. Forever silencing this wasted piece of humanity. His mother ought to be proud.
That’s how I do it.
Thats adorable.
Perhaps you should have just removed your jacket as I did. Saved lots of time and worked out just fine.
I wasnt armed as I was on-duty so Fire/EMS personnel are not allowed to carry.
I did t see any remarkable about that run. I was a Medic in Detroit. A ghetto medic we called ourselves. Encounters (even worse ) like that happen all, the time.
Get out and live a little. Take risk. I await your story.
Watch the video. It was a good shoot. Police gave the threatening man ample opportunity to comply, but he remained a threat. Sorry, you just dont threaten people with a baseball bat (deadly force) and expect something bad not to happen to you.
Investigation? It wont be an investigation. It will be a lynching. White people are in season.
Good shoot??? Even when they blasted him in the back of the head while he was already critically wounded laying face down on the floor???
David;
24 years of active duty with the US Army, Infantry and Cbt Engr, stories about fighting are a dime a dozen.
I’ve done enough of that kind of “living” for a lifetime in that regard.
I hope never to have to play those games again, as now I am slower, older, more broken up and just not in the mood for silly testosterone games. That’s why “Colonel” Colt made men equal.
I do believe there is truth to the adage “don’t fight with old men ( or women), they’ll just kill you”, has merit.
Thank for your service and protecting us civilians.
24 years is plenty. I know what you mean Im slower, older too. Im retired.
You are correct. There are unneeded stories of fighting everywhere! A dime a dozen.
Someone had asked how do you get a bat from the guy. I merely replied to that. Even though the question wasnt to me.
I usually dont talk about my exploits much.
I did notice that as I got older, had more corrective surgeries, and issues, I carried my firearm more and more,
Now I carry all the time. Not because I wouldnt enjoy a good challenge, but Im just to damn tired these days. LOL
Peace. Thanks again for your service to this nation.
