In the midst of Covid, Remembering the ol'fogies who lived through the last one
Today | Freepers

Post what you remember of the habits and practices of these generations, almost all of the last of them died in the 70s and 80s. There are a few out there hanging on but they tend to be the younger ones and weren't adults experiencing this.

1. Gentlemen were expected to always have a Handkerchief in his front pocket so it is immediately at the ready to cover his mouth. 2. A Great Gentleman will have two, one for himself and another that he could give to another.

Well that post reduced me to a b.tch :)

Tears in the eyes and almost outright crying :)

That was ####ing beautiful man.

Would you mind if I saved that post in a personal word document?

It reads like it was written for a GOOD Christmas movie or something along those lines.

incredibly touching.

Wow.

Sounds like a tough dude.

We had great pops :)

When we needed to make masks, I remembered handkerchiefs that had been gifts from my husband’s aunt—born in 1937. I never imagined we’d have a use for them but . . . .

Save it, print it, spread the word. As long as we carry their memory, as long as we try to live like what was the zenith of real America, there still might be some pockets of the country worth saving. The rest, nuke it. I'm old-fashioned, I admit it. What some of these Generation Zero types call nostalgia, I call my childhood. Bunch of vapid space aliens.

My Mom was born in 1918. She passed 5 years ago. I think the Depression had a far greater impact on her life. She spoke often about the Depression hardships. The only reference she ever made to the Pandemic was when she recounted to me what she’d read in a newly published Community History Book. (and the History Book says the Flu kept cycling back on the community,,,, somebody decided the outdoor Privy’s were the source of reinfection,, Wagonloads of Lime were hauled thru town (Population 1000) Every Privy in town got 5-6 5 gallon buckets of Lime dumped in it,, No one knows whether the Flu ran its course or if the Lime worked,)

Yea, now I appreciate their affection towards these things and why they had so many of them.

My great aunt would insist I take a one when I left her house, she said it would keep me from catching.

This is my Grandma and Grandpa. Courtesy of John Prine

Grandpa wore his suit to dinner
Nearly every day
No particular reason
He just dressed that way
Brown necktie and a matching vest
And both his wingtip shoes
He built a closet on our back porch
And put a penny in a burned out fuse

Grandpa was a carpenter
He built houses stores and banks
Chain smoked Camel cigarettes
And hammered nails in planks
He was level on the level
And shaved even every door
And voted for Eisenhower
Cause Lincoln won the war

Well, he used to sing me “Blood on the Saddle”
And rock me on his knee
And let me listen to radio
Before we got TV
Well, he’d drive to church on Sunday
And take me with him too
Stained glass in every window
Hearing aids in every pew

Grandpa was a carpenter
He built houses stores and banks
Chain smoked Camel cigarettes
And hammered nails in planks
He was level on the level
And shaved even every door
And voted for Eisenhower
Cause Lincoln won the war

Now my grandma was a teacher
Went to school in Bowling Green
Traded in a milking cow
For a Singer sewing machine
She called her husband “Mister”
And walked real tall in pride
She used to buy me comic books
After grandpa died

Boy are their shoes hard to fill.

It’s nice to be able to be proud of our fathers.

not as common as it once was.

“Sometimes he’d let loose and take the tie off!

Always had a button up shirt and dress pants and shoes on.

Very different times.”

Sounds like my dad. Born 1919. Never owned a pair of jeans.
His dad (grampa Clyde) was a blacksmith and a wagon wheelright, born 1874.

I could talk about pool all day.

Me and a black guy named Nick would go to the old “Golden Eight Ball” in PHX and own it.

We had an audience watching 5 rail banks and just smooth runs.

It was to much. We really enjoyed it.

:^)

My parents were children in the 1950’s, and one thing they occasionally mention, is that back then you never addressed your elders by their first names. It was Mr. or Mrs. or Miss, and the surname. And if the elder was a close friend of the family you could call them Aunt or Uncle.
My parents get pretty irritated when a younger person addresses them by first name.
When I was little and we were sorting out my great-grandfather’s stuff (he was born in 1917), I saw a batch of WW2 medals and paraphernalia, and one item I mistook for some sort of medal ribbon...they found this hilarious. Told me the thing was Pop’s garters to hold up his socks.
