Daisy Ridley Opens Up About Star Wars Episode 9 Criticism

Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker made a lot of money and has its fans, but was, all things considered, not particularly well received. The film, which has a 52% approval rate on Rotten Tomatoes, ends the Star Wars saga in a manner that did not satisfy everyone--and one of its stars has been left wondering where the love has gone.

Daisy Ridley, who plays Rey in the most recent trilogy, has opened up about the film's reception on the podcast Dragcast (as picked up on by Entertainment Weekly). According to Ridley, while the experience of being in Star Wars has been amazing, the immediate wake of this film's reception was difficult for her.

... Ridley said. "It was weird, I felt like all of this love that we’d sort of been shown the first time around, I was like, 'Where’s the love gone?'".

(snip)

Ridley also said that she watched the documentary included on the movie's Blu-Ray release, The Skywalker Legacy, and that it's been difficult to reconcile the movie's reception with the love that went into it. "I think it’s that tricky thing of when you’re part of something that is so filled with love and then people [don’t like it]," she said. "You know, everyone’s entitled to not like something, but it feels like it’s changed slightly. But I think in general that’s because social media and what have you."

Now serving something completely different, for Star Wars fans. Love the newest trilogy or not, I figure people can take a break from the "news" for a while. [Confession: I didn't check out the podcast, only the Entertainment Weekly article.

I can definitely confirm NOT ALL characters in the SW series are loved and accepted by fans. Jar Jar comes to mind, they should have killed it off within 5 min after his appearance.

The last three were very entertaining for me. They all had plot holes you could fly a 747 through, but that’s ok. Few movies today don’t insult my intelligence on some gross level. The “good” ones are usually strong on story and low on special effects. They are also usually surprisingly low budget.

A favorite reviewer on Youtube for me is “The Critical Drinker”. He nails it with both the good and the bad movies.

I can’t tell you how many movies I’ve either shut off or wanted to shut off because of stupid and implausible twists in the plot.

Mary Sue seems like a nice gal. I hope she gets some more good roles in which she doesn’t have to play Mary Sue again.

Well, you (and Disney and SJW's) sort of ruined it. So there's that.

Daisy, just forget about Star Wars and move on to your next big thing.

Ask Natalie Portman how to do it if you can’t figure it out.

Found “Solo” to be dreadful to the point where I fell asleep *three* times watching it on Netflix. On the other hand, I thought “Rogue One” was actually a pretty good Star Wars story.

Star Wars fans are impossible to satisfy. They will never be happy.

I recently saw some old footage of the phenomena that the original Star Wars was in 1977. Lines of people that were composed of men, women, every race and age. The movie really brought people together for a great story.

Where is the love, Daisy? Your writers and producers killed it by being so partisan.

The only good Star Wars movies were Episode IV: A New Hope and Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, and even those were marginal pulp. The uniqueness of the films was what made them good.

George Lucas is an interesting idea man, but an awful writer and director. It was smart of him to offload director duties after Episode IV, but after Episode V, the scripts went downhill from their mediocre baseline.

Adaptations of Bronte and Dickens for her.

Star Wars
quit watching as soon as Jar Jar Binks showed up - haven't watched the rest of that movie or any since...

Disney wrings every last nickel out of anything they get in their clutches. Which usually leads to some really bad, straight to dvd content.

That’s where Star Wars is headed.

Jar Jar comes to mind, they should have killed it off within 5 min after his appearance.

Instead, by becoming a "senator", Jar Jar epitomized the joke that democracy eventually becomes.

Jar Jar is annoying.

But I find the two male jedi (Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan) wielding light saber fights are incredibly sexy.

Only thing enjoyable for the prequel trilogy.
