This day in history. April 12, 1861, the American Civil War began when Confederate shore batteries under General P.G.T. Beauregard opened fire on Union-held Fort Sumter in South Carolinas Charleston Bay.
For 33 hours, the shore batteries lobbed 4,000 shells in the direction of the fort. No one on either side had been killed. On April 13, U.S. Major Robert Anderson surrendered the fort. Two days later, U.S. President Abraham Lincoln issued a proclamation calling for 75,000 volunteer soldiers to quell the Southern insurrection.

He was in Texas to inspect and fortify the line of forts set up to defend from Indian attacks.
And so it began, ...... But didn’t it also end 4 yrs to date later?

Dem darn Yankees don instigated a fight! The South will rise again!
Actually the claim that Doubleday invented baseball wasn't made until 1908, 15 years after Doubleday died. Doubleday himself never made any claim to have invented baseball.
The last big surrender occurred on April 26th at Bennett Place near Durham, NC, when Gen. Johnston surrendered his army of about 90,000 troops to Gen. Sherman.
Correct. General Stand Watie suspended his campaign June 23.
The last white Confederate general to suspend his campaign was Edmund Kirby Smith, June 2.
Maybe, but I heard he's back this year under another name.
Please don't say the Black ones are carrying on the fight someplace.
The transfer of Federal owned properties could have been negotiated. But too many morons North and South wanted a war.
