This day in history. April 12, 1861, the American Civil War began when Confederate shore batteries under General P.G.T. Beauregard opened fire on Union-held Fort Sumter in South Carolina’s Charleston Bay.

For 33 hours, the shore batteries lobbed 4,000 shells in the direction of the fort. No one on either side had been killed. On April 13, U.S. Major Robert Anderson surrendered the fort. Two days later, U.S. President Abraham Lincoln issued a proclamation calling for 75,000 volunteer soldiers to quell the Southern “insurrection.”

Robert E Lee was in Sam Antonio (Texas y'all) when Ft Sumter fell.

He was in Texas to inspect and fortify the line of forts set up to defend from Indian attacks.

Interesting historical note about the two commanding officers ... Beauregard had been a student of Anderson at West Point.

The last civil war started with cannon fire. The next will begin with a scoped rifle shot.

And Abner Doubleday was part of the group of Union officers that decided on their own to occupy the fort. Yep. The inventor of baseball actually helped kick off the Civil War.

Not quite. Lee surrendered on April 9th. Davis wasn't caught until May. And I believe the last Confederate general didn't surrender till June.

Yep. The inventor of baseball actually helped kick off the Civil War.

Actually the claim that Doubleday invented baseball wasn't made until 1908, 15 years after Doubleday died. Doubleday himself never made any claim to have invented baseball.

The last big surrender occurred on April 26th at Bennett Place near Durham, NC, when Gen. Johnston surrendered his army of about 90,000 troops to Gen. Sherman.

“And I believe the last Confederate general didn't surrender till June.”

Correct. General Stand Watie suspended his campaign June 23.

The last white Confederate general to suspend his campaign was Edmund Kirby Smith, June 2.

The transfer of Federal owned properties could have been negotiated. But too many morons North and South wanted a war.
