Sci.Dev.Net is an interesting site. This guy is instrumental, or was:
https://www.bing.com/search?q=nick+ishmael+perkins&form=EDGTCT&qs=PF&cvid=6f1597f6689b455ca1ccf9ddb1b6049c&refig=cef2cfb1e46f42f0c4734b22761f938f&cc=US&setlang=en-US&plvar=0&PC=ACTS#

I’m seeing lots of Chinese names as authors. But there’s this from 5/25/04:

https://www.scidev.net/global/health/news/china-starts-testing-sars-vaccine-on-humans.html

another article on the page pointed to: “a paper in the Journal of Virology showing that cinanserin can stop the SARS virus from replicating.” And mentions “ a collaborative group from China, Germany, Denmark and Poland have spent the past year screening more than 8,000 existing drugs”

https://www.scidev.net/global/disease/news/chinaeurope-team-identifies-15-antisars-drugs.html

Seems strange we haven’t seen any of that mentioned in 2020.

also, a Chinese article from 2008 that refers to ‘lipid rafts’:

“While some studies have shown the possible endocytic pathway for SARS, we have revealed this is a concrete route of entry,” Jiang told SciDev.Net.
By doing so, the research team identified that the SARS virus does not rely on the conventional endocytic pathways to enter cells. Rather, ‘lipid rafts’, a section of the cell membrane that is enriched with cholesterol, play an active role in the entry of the SARS virus.
“In future studies, the rafts could be a potential target for treating SARS by blocking virus entry into cells,” says Jiang.
Liao Kan, a senior scientist from the Shanghai Institutes for Biological Sciences at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, praises the study as significant because it has revealed a viral entry pathway, which so far, has been poorly understood.

https://www.scidev.net/global/disease/news/scientists-shed-light-on-sars-virus-cell-entry.html

I think the outcome of the 4 human mice given the Sars wasn’t good. Same as the mice, ferrets and cats - as in dead. But if there’s a company named Sinovac Biotech, or notes from a WHO meeting around the timeframe of the article, I guess the article could be substantiated. I did click the link at the bottom of the article, but the link to SCIENCE mag was inactive.

If the research above was actually accurate, one wonders why none of that seemed to filter down in how China was treating CCPVirus in 2020. Or why the rest of the world was starting essentially from scratch with CCPV. “Lipid rafts” seem a far cry from spike proteins and ACE-2s. We haven’t seen use of cinanserin that China has disclosed, anyway. So are the articles feel good propaganda to make the Chinese people happy happy joy joy? Or is there any basis for them?

the CDC was saying in early March not to close the schools or limit travel. Obviously, Trump didn’t listen to that advice. He shut down travel from Europe on the 11th, the same day California instituted public schools closure, travel from the UK two days later, as shelter-in-place began to go viral. Almost hard to believe it was only a month ago.

Regarding your post 574 on the last thread...

Off the bat, I’ll admit sometimes math and I don’t always see eye-to-eye. So feel free to correct me.

Shouldn’t your future estimates take into account the slope of your metric and determine future deaths by the DFI predicted at the time you’re predicting?

But you used the present DFR for your estimate of the future deaths in your graph?

I don’t believe it was circulating in Calif as early as Sep. because the charts don’t reflect that. (Not to mention in most places in Sep it was still upwards of 100-105F, dry as a bone, and fires and earthquakes happening that grouped people).

But I do believe that as soon as disease was seen in Wuhan, that some citizens - dual or otherwise returned before travel restrictions were put in Jan 23-Feb 4, especially in the few days prior to the Feb 4 last call. It’s likely that our community spread is from those 16K self-quarantining travelers who came back and were lax about self-quarantine. Same as happened to Australia. The first death in the US from CCP Virus being March 1, and Calif’s being March 4, given 3-weeks-to-death, we’d have likely seen many more deaths or at least many more ICU intubations well before March if CCPVirus was widespread prior to Jan or even at the beginning of Jan.

Here are the flu charts for Calif - pretty steady and on the low side until we hit January. There was even early talk of it being a mild flu season until the year turned.

Sounds like a great summer for the kids. And I agree that they got much more out of that summer.

We were docked in a Marina that had 2 fantastic tiki bars outside and indoor restaurants. We hung out with all our boat neighbors. That was good enough for me. Plus, While docked, we didn’t drink and drive. Just had to walk the pier and not fall in.

That’s sad. I guess it’s a sign of the times that when someone not medical dies, we wonder, how on earth did someone like him catch it? plane train little league?

I agree with you... it was an interesting concept but the sequencing doesn’t support it either I don’t think

Good coronavirus news...
https://twitter.com/NBCNews/status/1249548394680459270

“3 anonymous individuals are believed to have broken a new transcontinental record, using an Audi A8 and taking advantage of freeways emptied by the coronavirus to drive from New York City to Redondo Beach, California, in 26 hours, 38 minutes.”

LOL!

“Why Most Published Research Findings Are False”

- see https://journals.plos.org/plosmedicine/article?id=10.1371/journal.pmed.0020124

A contrarian view that is still worth reading now as when it was published.

DATA

Sense of smell was lost by some people weeks ago. They’re still waiting for it to come back

...One ENT doctor leading the charge to get loss of sense of smell recognized by the World Health Organization as a coronavirus symptom is Claire Hopkins, President of the British Rhinological Society.
Hopkins pushed for loss of sense of smell to be included in a coronavirus symptom-tracking mobile app developed by King’s College London. Subsequently, on April, 1 King’s reported its research found loss of sense of smell or taste is a stronger predictor of coronavirus infection than fever. Out of 400,000 people in the UK reporting one or more symptoms between March 24-29, 18% had lost their sense of smell or taste and 10.5% were suffering from fever... The letter said patients with new-onset anosmia should self-isolate.

JAPAN

Students in eastern Japan are protesting the reopening of schools...According to The Mainichi, a Japanese newspaper, the students demanded the school remained closed until “adequate supplies of masks and other protective equipment are secured.”
The students further asked for online classes to continue their studies uninterrupted, among other measures.

looks like the students like on-line classes after all. Will that translate to the USA?

SPAIN

Cautious hope for pandemic peak as Spain readies to reopen some factories

...Some factory and construction workers in Spain were set to return to work on Monday, with police to hand out face masks at metro and train stations.
The fortnight of “economic hibernation” is about to be lifted, drawing criticism from some regional leaders and unions, but the rest of the lockdown restrictions in the nation of around 47 million people will remain in place.

VENEZUELA

Venezuelans return home as coronavirus piles more misery on migrants

...Maduro said migrants who tested positive would be sent to hospital while those who didn’t would be quarantined for two weeks in hotels. “We are taking all the preventive measures to ensure no positive cases get into Venezuela,” he said.

But David Smolansky, an exiled opposition politician tasked with defending Venezuelan migrants, claimed hundreds of returnees, including pregnant women and newborns, were being herded into quarantine in filthy government installations on the border. “These Venezuelans are being treated like cattle,” he tweeted.

INDIA

The travellers — from Israel, Mexico, Australia and Austria — were caught taking a walk in Rishikesh, where the Beatles sought spirituality at an Ashram in 1968.

Local police officer Vinod Sharma said they were each made to write “I did not follow the rules of lockdown so I am so sorry” 500 times.
