The “herd immunity” works good with vaccines where no lives are at stake. However when you have live fire, and have to sacrifice your Dad or Grandmother for the sake of “herd immunity”, the theory is not so appealing.

The vulnerable would still social distance as we achieve herd immunity by opening everything up. It’s just the flu, bro.
It’s not a theory, it is the reality of dealing with an epidemic/pandemic. You have to reach herd immunity either through a vaccine or 40-70% infection rates to end it. We are going to get to herd immunity one way or the other. The longer we keep everyone under quarantine, the longer it takes to reach herd immunity and the greater the death toll may be.
These kinds of statements are ridiculous and don’t reflect the data.I’m a grandmother, but, in my state, I’m three times more likely to die from a car accident than coronavirus. I have no plans to give up cars and I’m fine with the herd immunity approach to the virus. This is called “risk assessment” and we do it everyday. If the data changes and the risk for a serious case of the virus increases, the answer is simple: I’ll simply stay home. Voila — problem solved! Until that time, I’ll take my chances. By the way, I live in Kentucky, which currently ranks 34th in number of covid cases. What does this mean based on the number of cases and deaths divided by the population of my state? I have a .015 percent of getting coronavirus and a .00045 percent chance of dying from the virus (probably lower since I don’t have any underlying health conditions). Please stop scaring people by saying we are going to kill grandma if everyone doesn’t stay home!
Does it look like the lockdown is working to flatten the curve in New York or Italy? Not to me.
This virus could be so contagious that lockdowns are worthtless. Some studies have it traveling 27 feet, lasting in the air for three hours and being spread by mere breathing.
One thing is for damn sure -- that if there is a second wave of the virus, Sweden will have far fewer instance of it.

Have any FReepers purposely sought to become infected because they believe it is just like the flu? Just wondering how it worked out. Would they recommend it or do it again? Or was the sickness worse than expected? I hear FReepers saying we need to pursue herd immunity, but never heard of any one of them trying to get infected, like we do with chickenpox.
Their survival of the fittest fantasy would be even less appealing to them, if they knew about COVID-19 with respect to obesity.
