Military recruiting struggles as enlistment stations close
Associated Press ^ | April 4, 2020 | Lolita C. Baldor

Marine Gunnery Sgt. Kevin Meyer does his best recruiting face-to-face. He can look people in the eye, read their body language and get insight into whether they would make a good Marine.

But coronavirus quarantines have shut down most recruiting stations. So Meyer and other recruiters have turned increasingly to social media. And that has its drawbacks.

“They usually won’t run away if you’re talking to them in person,” said Meyer, noting that if they are online or on the phone, they can just hang up. “They just stop responding, and the conversation just ends without a conclusion.”

As the coronavirus pandemic worsens and the country turns increasingly to the military for help, America’s armed services are struggling to get new recruits as families and communities hunker down. Recruiters scrounging for recruits online are often finding people too consumed with their own financial and health care worries to consider a military commitment right now.

The services, as a result, could fall thousands short of their enlistment goals if the widespread lockdowns drag on, forcing them to pressure current troops to stay on in order to maintain military readiness. …

The virus will end and people are going to be looking for jobs. Two or three months of low recruitment numbers will be followed by an abundance of potential recruits. I really don’t see a problem here.

The folks that run away or hang up when talking to a recruiter are very likely included in the group that’ll become members of the AP in the future.

Access to food decreases as chowhalls close for the night.

Welcome to the family.

My sons graduating from MCRD San Diego was one of the top two moments of my life.
Clear your slate and enjoy those couple of days at graduation.

On the other hand, I’ll bet retention is pretty good right now. Not too many folks want to leave a steady job in times of uncertainty...

this may very well be one of those...”go out and find and embellish a story” type story, meaning there is probably very little truth to it...

No matter how badly some elements in their countries want to wage war our planet is now so economically interconnected that they’ll be waging war on themselves. This has shown we HAVE to ramp up the lost ability to sustain ourselves as much as possible. Like the rubber shortage during WWII we have to rise above.

This escaped virus from a Chinese weapon lab has shown how ridiculous aggression is at this time as they can’t cycle their crappy products on a locked down population as they’re used to, so these self-proclaimed communists actually capitalists are screwing themselves.

Opposition to impressment by the Royal Navy was one of the causes of the American Revolutionary War—it was one of the 27 colonial grievances in the Declaration of Independence, number 26 on the list.
He (King George III) has constrained our fellow citizens taken captive on the high seas to bear arms against their country, to become the executioners of their friends and brethren, or to fall themselves by their hands.
I would not allow fake news to incite me to call for practices that turn the USA into its antithesis.

I will definitely be in Parris Island when that day comes! Might spend the whole week there. Looking forward to it.

Look into it and try to get rooms on the base. They do that at MCRD San Diego and I bet they do at Paris Island as well. It is much easier to stay on base than to have to come and go.
You have to reserve about 3 weeks before the graduation.
Letters from basic are the best!
