ITALY

There is growing evidence that the death toll and infection rate figures being reported daily by Italian officials may be much lower than the reality.

Since the coronavirus outbreak began in Italy in late February, the public has been relying on official government data for a picture of how many deaths, cases, and recoveries there have been in each part of the country, and how things are changing.

Italy’s Department for Civil Protection releases these statistics daily at around 6pm. The data is then pored over by experts worldwide, looking for evidence that Italy’s quarantine measures are containing the spread as hoped – and that other countries can confidently follow its example.

But a growing number of Italian experts have now said these numbers may not be reliable.

“For sure, the figures are wrong,” said Matteo Villa, a researcher at the Italian Institute for Political Studies and author of a a new study (in Italian) titled ”Coronavirus: Lethality in Italy, between appearance and reality”

He that the death toll may have been underestimated by up to 6,000, or a third of the official total.

PANAMA
Four deaths and 198 new cases of COVID-19 were reported by Panama within 24 hours. There are already 1,673 positive cases and 41 deaths. The Health authorities of Panama reported this Thursday, April 3, that a total of 1,406 patients are in home isolation and 141 are in the ward, while 72 are in intensive care.

A regional housing price crash 10 years ago has nothing to do with this virus or your town’s current economy. And a temporary construction slowdown on the other side of town doesn’t affect you, or the construction workers being paid to sit at home (or who are waiting it out in messico). Banks pay construction loans out in steps, so they’re not hurting either. Completed construction affects you by increased competition, lower value on older homes, and higher property taxes. I about had a cow when they changed my zoning to allow higher density. Your strawman has no legs.

Wow...well, that's certainly interesting info, about Italy death rate, from your link....

..."It is plausible that deaths are underestimated," Higher Health Institute president Silvio Brusaferro stated. "We report deaths that are signalled with a positive swab. Many other deaths are not tested with a swab." The possible scale of the disparity showed up this week when death records for the month of March from different years were compared. The data showed a very large difference between the number of Covid-19 deaths reported by authorites, and the total death toll in different Italian regions....

From the very beginning I’ve said it’s easier to put out brushfires than a conflagration.

It will probably be with us forever. But we will develop herd immunity as we accumulate survivors and vaccinated (when that’s ready). And treatments will become proven and ubiquitous. It just takes time.

Focus on the real enemy. The virus. And its ally, China.

Germany routinely attributes deaths to what ever convenient underlying comorbidity they can. At least, that was the report a week or so ago. But they are on the steep part of the curve now.
