5-year-old girl treated for non-life-threatening injuries; park closed to visitors
East Bay Regional Park District staff closed Dublin Hills Regional Park to visitors after a 5-year-old girl was attacked and bitten by a coyote Wednesday afternoon, authorities said.
Park officials immediately responded to a park location around 2:20 p.m. after learning that the girl, who was walking with family members, was approached and bitten by one of five or six coyotes. The girls family quickly intervened and the animals fled.
Alameda County Fire Department firefighters also responded, and provided care before transporting the girl to UCSF Benioff Childrens Hospital Oakland for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, EBRPD police Capt. Alan Love said.
The park, which covers about 650 acres within open space north of Interstate 580 and northeast of Schaefer Ranch, was closed to visitors while parks staff coordinates with California Department of Fish and Wildlife officials to locate, trap and remove the coyotes, parks spokesman Dave Mason said.

Not should. Would, had the state not shut down the schools. If it weren’t for f*cking China, this may never have happened.
Im 100% with you on that, Cat. Cant tell you how many times Ive thought, thanks, China(heavily sarcastically). We only *thought* China sucked before. Now we know. Eff them. BUT... I cant stretch it to everything. Lots of families homeschool or take a day to just be a family and take a walk.
The other side of that coin is whether "this [pack of coyotes] would have normally been in" some other part of the park.
It's the balance of nature between people, animals, and plants.
What happens when someone neglects their home garden? Weeds begin to encroach.
As long as that trail was constantly being used, the coyotes stayed away and kept themselves to other parts of the park.
Once everyone began sheltering in place, the natural instincts of these animals was to spread out, to see what areas they can control in search of food. It's fortunate that this one family was able to push them back, but it's not because they should have been somewhere else.

In the cities. ..

Kids don’t go to the park on weekends? Five year olds don’t go to the park on weekdays or in the summer?
ZACKLY. Declare open season on them.
I have been telling people this for 15 years.
Kill them all.
They are terroristic beasts.
“Coyotes saunter down the residential streets in Ft Worth any time of day. Not afraid of people. One trotted past a group of children playing in their yard in broad daylight. All this right next to a busy park and school.”
I live in Fort Worth, but had not noticed such a problem, if you don’t mind, where in the city, which park(s)?

Last February [2010], Texas Governor Rick Perry went for a jog with his dog. At some point, Perry shot and killed a coyote with his laser-sighted Sturm, Ruger & Co. LCP .380. Firing hollow points, apparently. In defense of his dog, also apparently.
Just why Perrys two security guys (on the taxpayers dime) werent around to shoot the coyote on the Governors behalf, and what distance/threat level was involved, remains a mystery.
But the story as told fits the dont mess with Texas meme. So it remains as told. And Perry isnt the only one cashing-in on the increasingly mythical encounter. Sturm, Ruger & Co. have created a $340 laser-less Coyote Special to commemorate the Governors pest control pistol.
Coyotes are varmits, same as fox, skunks, coons, etc. They tear up game bird nest and yard pets. Nice to hear Mr Perry knows a thing or two.

A .22-.250 does wonders on coyotes.
I think medium to large size dog “carry” is still legal most everywhere.
Hard to carry in an IWB but kicks arse when delivering long distance mail. Heeheeheee. Hey mr yote, just dropping you a note. :).
Nice to hear from you my FRiend. My Mauser .22-.250 has taken out over 50 coyotes over the years. I have lived most of my life in AZ and NM, no shortage of targets.
In the same discussion they wonder where their small pets have disappeared to.
Watched a coyote walk thru my suburban GA front yard this morning. Pretty brazen for a supposedly skittish species. Big healthy one.
At this point, it doesn't much matter. Governor Gruesome has outlawed all schools in the state until further notice. Or until all the private schools are forced to go belly up and the state and its' "benevolent" Union teachers can start the indoctrination at age 2 or 3.
Rabies shots are better than the risk and outcome if the animal is rabid. Modern rabies vaccination is 5 injections (mine were in the left arm) given over about one month. About like a tetanus shot. Not like the old injections in the abdomen. Not to be feared.
I find this very hard to believe
Im a mountain biker tgat bikes not only that park but every other park in East Bay and see coyotes all the time
they are not aggressive. They run away. They are NOT in packs either
They do hunt at night- they will hop a fence and take a little dog however
Happens all the time here in Marin County
I see coyotes out in mid-day now and then on my day hikes here in the SF Bay Area.
