5-year-old girl treated for non-life-threatening injuries; park closed to visitors
East Bay Regional Park District staff closed Dublin Hills Regional Park to visitors after a 5-year-old girl was attacked and bitten by a coyote Wednesday afternoon, authorities said.
Park officials immediately responded to a park location around 2:20 p.m. after learning that the girl, who was walking with family members, was approached and bitten by one of five or six coyotes. The girl’s family quickly intervened and the animals fled.
Alameda County Fire Department firefighters also responded, and provided care before transporting the girl to UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, EBRPD police Capt. Alan Love said.
The park, which covers about 650 acres within open space north of Interstate 580 and northeast of Schaefer Ranch, was closed to visitors while parks staff coordinates with California Department of Fish and Wildlife officials to locate, trap and remove the coyotes, parks spokesman Dave Mason said.

That stinks. Poor girl will probably have to get the rabies shots.

I wonder if this child would have normally been in kindergarten or pre-school.
I don’t think rabies treatment now days is as bad as it used to be, but nothing is pleasant about dog bites and/or infections. Keep kids close when walking in parks. Also I’ve never been approached by a coyote when I’m with Mr Smith and Wesson at least none that lived.

In the middle of the day?
I thought coyotes roamed mostly from dusk to dawn.
One early morning I walked down my dad’s long drive to get the paper and saw a coyote running down the street with breakfast in its mouth.
Thought it was probably a rabbit or a cat(poor thing).
Once it saw me, it veered into a neighbor’s yard.
I have been thru post exposure rabies treatment. It is a somewhat drawn out process of injections over weeks. But the cost was the most painful of all.
Why do you wonder? Does it matter? Does it make a difference? It is what it is.
Coyotes out, in force, in my neighborhood. Have seen them at 10:00 in the morning, even with kids on their bikes
This is what happens when people retreat into their homes for extended periods of time. The other flora and fauna begin to regrow.
This pack of coyotes was probably scared to encroach until people stopped walking the trails. They noticed the absence of predators and began to assert their own dominance.

Coyotes saunter down the residential streets in Ft Worth any time of day. Not araid of people. One trotted past a group of children playing in their yard in broad daylight. All this right next to a busy park and schoo. They kill the small pets, cat, dogs whatever. Someday they will take down a small child then maybe, or not, the city will deal with the problem.
Well, if school or pre-school had been in session, this child may not have been attacked in the park because she would have been in school.

How do you know? Maybe they were a homeschooling family and they did this routinely...or this was their first time there...or whatever. A huge stretch to blame the corona virus on this. Geez. Get a grip if your first thought to this poor family’s angst was “well...maybe she was supposed to be in school”. Also...she was pretty young...she wasn’t missing a calculus final.
One time, one crossed in the crosswalk in front of me.
I have no desire to go through it. I was turkey hunting in the spring in Missouri years ago. I was chirping a slate call like a hen clucking. Painted and camo’d up. The coyote came looking for turkey for breakfast. What it got was a round from a S&W K-22 at 15 or so feet. Never thought about the 20 ga across my lap. Guess we were both a little sleepy that morning. They are a hunter of opportunity. People need to keep kids close.
What?, yourself. Girl gets attacked and poster wonders if she should have been in school, anyway.
