Meet Toshi, a paralyzed Tuxedo kitten. He was slated to be euthanized due to his fractured spine, but was rescued. His handicap doesn't stop him from doing virtually everything and anything else a kitten does.

Video, 11 minutes, 26 seconds.

Toshi is a lucky cat. If he’s kept mostly indoors, he could survive like this for a long while.
Eventually. he may benefit from having two rear wheels attached to his hind legs. I’ve seen injured puppies, injured baby squirrels wearing them.

The Iguana is just not into cats, at least not nosy kittens.
He’s (the Iguana) too young to hiss in disapproval.

Yeah, I’ve raised several special needs animals and they each have their challenges. Unfortunately, they don’t have the lifespan of your average pets.

OK, I’m going to be the curmudgeon here. Why are people saving animals that are blind, paralyzed, missing limbs, abused almost to death, etc. when there are thousands of completely healthy animals euthanized every year? They are not people. It makes no sense to spend a lot of money on severely damaged animals when those resources could be used to save many more healthy pets.

They’re saving or rescuing them one at a time because they can. The question to ask with all of them is whether or not they can have a decent quality of life. If the answer is “yes”, as it obviously is with Toshi, than how could you just choose to euthanize them merely because he’s not as up to par as some other kitten ?

The better question to ask is why aren’t folks doing a better job of spaying/neutering animals to prevent an explosion of unwanted/ferals ?

“...they don’t have the lifespan of your average pets.”

Sometimes it’s better to have a longer time of joy, less than normal, than a shorter time of sadness and discomfort. It how you lived, not how you died. It’s better to bring joy to those around you than never get the chance to.

Animals just chug right along with a disability.

I’m glad the nice lady saved him.

You’ll note he’s wearing a specialized diaper. He wouldn’t be able to use a litter box as he probably doesn’t have control over his bowels or urinary functions given the lower spinal paralysis. He goes when he goes, like a human baby.

I absolutely agree that there should be more spaying and neutering. How about with liberals?.... just kidding.

However, how do we know what an animal is feeling? How do we know what their quality of life is? What is the rationale behind spending money on any one animal that could be used to save more than one? I love animals dearly, but they are not people. It is our duty to them to manage them as best we can, and that means using the resources devoted to animal welfare in the most practical means possible.

I may get myself in even more trouble here when I say that many times people keep their pets alive long after it would be humane to let them pass. It is almost impossible to judge an animal’s pain and suffering, so why put them through painful treatments that they don’t understand? From the animal’s perspective, they are being tortured by their owners and doctors. They have no concept of the idea of prolonging life. I really don’t understand putting animals through treatments for cancer, for example, that maybe only prolong their misery for a few extra months.

Every day there are sweet dogs and cats being euthanized that are healthy and would make great pets. We should not expend limited resources on animals that are blind or crippled or almost beyond help due to criminal abuse.
