If you have been spooked by the coronavirus and are looking at purchasing your first firearm, but do not want to break the bank, there are several things that you should keep in mind. Aside from choosing a handgun that is going to be affordable on your wallet, you will want to think of caliber. The Top 5 BEST Budget Handguns we are about to name are all chambered in 9mm. For someone who is a 1st time handgun buyer, it goes without debating that they should purchase a 9mm. The ammunition is typically the cheapest you can get among all the popular semi-auto handgun choices on the market, the self-defense (hollow-point ammunition) available in 9mm is stout enough for defense, and there are exponentially more options available in 9mm than any other possible cartridge out there.

TOP 5 BEST BUDGET HANDGUNS SMITH & WESSON SD9VE 9MM
The Smith & Wesson SD9VE 9mm is the embodiment of what we are looking for. The funky name and acronym for this pistol stands for Self Defense 9mm Value Enhanced. It has a simple dis-assembly and maintenance process (it copies a standard Glock) and it has only the bare, essential features someone would need in a home defense or beginner CCW pistol. It also carries 16 Rounds in its 2 magazines you receive and has a semi-attractive look with a Bi-Tone finish. At an MSRP of $389 and often sold for much cheaper than that, it is hard to go wrong with the Smith & Wesson SD9VE 9mm.

Really quite separate from the discussion of a first time gun buyer, but I always come back to my Sig P238. Some guns just fit, just work. I am amazed at how well I can handle that little gun.
Whenever I put that rascal in my belt, the barrel goes down my leg. Seems to attract a lot of attention.
I have put a “gazillion” rounds through mine (well, technically Mrs. Lando’s) without a single jam.
Another that just gobbles ammo (but isn’t as pleasant to shoot) is the Bersa Thunder.
My son’s Christmas present to mom was a pistol. I told him to rent a .357, but put some .38 light loads in it for her to test out.
Well, he rented the .357, and after one shot my wife exclaimed “I’ll never shoot a revolver again!!”
She did like the M&P shield 2.0.
She loved some expensive version of a .380. A Kimber iirc.
She never did get around to buying one - so she’ll have to do with the 20 gauge pump with buckshot for now.
It’s just so easy to carry. My 238 has been reliable, though I’ve seen a fella force one too many rounds in a mag and have a jam.
Could it be hollowpoint rounds that make it jam?
“She never did get around to buying one - so shell have to do with the 20 gauge pump with buckshot for now.”
Probably a bit of a PITA when she’s pushing the cart around the grocery store.
“Probably a bit of a PITA when shes pushing the cart around the grocery store.”
LOL! Although it would probably help others maintain their “social distancing”. BTW - that term sounds like something a liberal would dream up. I think because it reminds me of the term “social justice”.
Mine never jammed, with any ammo.
“Mine never jammed, with any ammo.”
Have you had it for a few years?
I’ve had mine for a couple years and it has spent a lot of time at the range. A ton of rounds have gone through it including hollow points. I can’t recall it ever jamming.
Maybe it was operator error causing the jams.
Still like mine, heck, I might just buy another.
“I might just buy another.”
If you do, could you let us know how it functions?
Sure
Magnum Research chambered in .500 S&W? Sweet!
I’ll have to settle for my “puny” .454 Casul, though. /s
FWIW, I wouldn’t own/shoot a “pl@stic b@st@rd”, IF they were FREE, as I once saw the results of one “coming apart” on the range & SERIOUSLY wounding the USPS Inspector who was shooting it, using standard/government issue “duty” 115 grain ammo. = The victim came very near losing an eye & did have to have at least 5 reconstructive surgeries on his face.
(I believe that he would have lost his eye, had we NOT had a qualified paramedic on the range & who was VERY quick to “limit the damage”. - That said, I’m NOT a physician, nor do I play one on TV. - I’m just an old-school USA Rangemaster.)
IMO, those plastic pistols are POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS with any ammo.

IF a person is experienced enough to shoot a semi-auto pistol SAFELY, he/she could do FAR WORSE than a TISAS ZIGANA K or F, which is nearly as SAFE as a double-action Colt’s or S&W revolver.
(The ZIGANA can be safely carried, with the safety OFF, with a live round in the chamber. With the safety ON, it is even safer.)
I bought my ZIGANA K from classic firearms.com & my total cost was about 255.oo, including tax & transfer. ====> Most shooters, who have looked at it, GUESS that it’s a 600.oo+ pistol, as it holds 16 rounds of 9x19mm, is beautifully crafted & “deadly accurate” out to 50 Meters plus.
(The various TISAS ZIGANA models, in at least 3 sizes, are the favored sidearms of the Turkish Air-Land Commandos.- An old friend, who is a retired reserve Major General of the Turkish army, told me about the Zigana K.- “Mo” said, “The K is a ‘really plain Jane’ FIGHTING HANDGUN; don’t expect ‘fancy’.”)
NO, I do NOT work for the company. - I’m just a pleased retail customer, who has had ONLY good experiences with CLASSIC FIREARMS.
