The equinox reveals one of the secrets of Egypt's iconic Sphinx

The Sphinx had a "distinctive astronomical" moment with the sun during the spring equinox when, in a shining flourish, the sun set on the shoulder of the half-man, half-lion statue on March 19, according to the Egypt Ministry of Antiquities.

This phenomenon happens only twice a year, during the spring in March and the fall equinox in September, according to the ministry.

During the equinox, Earth's axis doesn't point toward or away from the sun, meaning that the Northern and Southern hemispheres receive equal amounts of the sun's light. In other words, the day and the night are equal in length.

The Sphinx is also strategically placed for the summer solstice in June, when the sun sets between the pyramids of pharaohs Khufu and Khafre.

The Sphinx's position during the equinoxes and summer solstice suggests that the ancient Egyptians purposefully positioned the hybrid lion-man statue. "This phenomenon proves that archaeologists were wrong when they said that the ancient Egyptians had found an ancient rock by accident and turned it into a statue of a human face and a non-human body," the Egypt Ministry of Antiquities wrote in a Facebook post.

What it proves is, the shoddy thinking that leads to unfounded conclusions, thrives in Egyptology.

Thanks.

That certainly saves a buncha aggravation in hauling my sorry butt there on the right day and time.

I do have to admit though that the sorta recent total Solar Eclipse was well worth the [minor] trip to the totality path.

The sun setting on the shoulder of the Sphinx would have been obscured by Khafre’s Temple, the ruins of which can be seen in the foreground. Seems like a dubious assertion.

So the secret is that the sphinx faces east? Amazing.

Plus, there is not one scrap of evidence from ancient inscriptions that it was their intent. This is just a modern free-form fantasy.

Heh... the Arc de Triomphe frames the Sun (rise, set, or both) on Napoleon's birthday -- but it also frames it for a week or so on either side of his birthday, hence, not much of a claim to fame there.

One step left or right by the photographer would give a totally different perspective.

Everything I know about the “secrets” of the pyramids and the Sphinx I learned from Dr. Gene Scott. Who got it from someone else.

“A long haired old man, sitting in a lounge chair, books all around him, puffing a cigar, and talking about the Great Pyramid.

“Dr. Gene Scott,” Darrell said with a smile. Thus was I introduced….and promptly addicted.

What the heck was this? This was the pastor of the University Cathedral, the host of the University Network, the most educated televangelist on the air and the absolute ruler of the universe that was Gene Scott’s version of Christianity. “

He was a one man tv network! He was on one of the UHF channels in the Bay Area - all the time. All that changed was his hat, it seemed.

That is just plain silly talk.

Didn’t some guy in a lawn chair rocket recently prove that the Earth is flat?

Earth’s axial never points at the sun. Life as we know it would be difficult. I hate to use the word impossible but it is close to that. Earth’s axis may tilt or lean towards or away from the sun which makes seasons. Too bad people don’t have to be smart to be journalists. It seems to me that if someone is going to tell me something they should be at least a little bit smarter than me.
