Prince Harry and Meghan Markle made a last-minute dash across the border from Canada to the US because of concerns over tax and losing their personal security, insiders have claimed. The couple took a private jet to Los Angeles, California with their ten-month-old son Archie just before non-essential travel between the two countries was suspended last week because of the coronavirus pandemic. It has now emerged that tax from earning money and keeping up residence in both places was a motivating factor for the move. The couple had wanted to be based in a Commonwealth like Canada where they could still perform royal duties while earning their own income.

Either the article is flat-out wrong or these two nitwits are ignorant of how the tax system works in North America. They would never “pay taxes in two countries,” at least in terms of income tax. They’d have to report their income in both countries, but the tax would be paid first in the country where the income is earned. The taxpayer then gets a credit on their tax return in the second country for the taxes they paid in the first country — and, if the tax rate in the second country is higher — only pays the difference between the two tax liabilities.

One silver lining of the kind of situation we are in with Coronavirus is that it strips away all of the stupid BS that normally obsesses our media culture. Remember the Chandra Levy/Gary Condit case in 2001? In August 2001, that was the Biggest Story in the World. On 9/11, everybody forgot about it as we started paying attention to stories that mattered.

Nobody gives a damn about Harry and Meghan, because we care about more important stuff, these days. Unfortunately for them, their business model requires us to care about them every day. Just bad luck for them that they have to share the front page with a pandemic.

To me, the real SMDH is: she had the rare opportunity to become favored & mentored by the richest & most powerful woman in the world - and squandered it.
Yeah she’d never quite have Kate’s position as heir, but still could have learned & been invited into the ways of the extremely rich & powerful, making a lasting legacy and cemented a position as a historical figure. But no, she had to be a bossy b!tch, finagle a few baubles, narrate a TV show, and be practically exiled to a now disease-ridden city on the other side of the planet.
Few have so massively blown an opportunity.
