Please check in with your observations about the situation on the ground in China, to the extent you are free to talk without consequences.

Checking in and being free to talk without consequences is not a safe option at this time. Or so I am being told by Chinese Americans with family and friends back in China. Chinese citizens are very fearful to say much via Internet or WeChat about the situation there. And especially anything critical of how things are being handled. As for what my Chinese American friends tell me, they say not to trust what the Chinese government reports.

Welp, my wife is Shanghainese. I lived in Hong Kong, Singapore, and Wuhan. I obtained an earned Ph.D. from Central China Normal University in Wuhan.

I have a niece in Wuhan who is a nurse. I have friends from Wuhan.

I also lived on Guam for 7 years. Now I’m in Flatlandia, err, Houston. Does that count?

Someone else I’ve wondered about.

Vannrox.

Remember him? He was that expat living in China. A fanboi for the CPC.

He posted a lot from his blog. Stuff like this...

https://metallicman.com/laoban4site/what-is-china-like/

He got crossways with several here. Got the zot.

would be interested to hear any impressions from your niece in Wuhan. We are being told that the Chinese Communist Party’s brilliance has solved this problem and Wuhan is back to normal. Does she concur?

I saw a large Chinese fire drill in Keelung once.
So, I got that going for me.

I haven’t heard anything in a few weeks.

She was appreciative that the PLA sent in about 3000 army medical personnel. It evidently really helped with the workload.

The medical staff is nor not allowed to go home. After their shift, they shower and sleep in the hospital.

Early on the impressions, I received were that the deaths and infections were running above the reported numbers by a factor of about 10 (i.e. 10=100) Which is horrific enough but, not the insane numbers people were posting here. If the numbers were as reported they wouldn’t have needed the extra personnel.

Also, this virus started in late October or early November. It was a month before they realized anything was wrong.

[During my last visit FR was also blocked, and even “Express VPN” failed frequently. The only way I could access FR was to create a hotspot with my Verizon phone that had an expensive international dialing option.

It’s possible that Freepers in China aren’t able to read or post currently. I hope not.]

vannrox, a Freeper who married a local and went native, did mention having problems accessing Free Republic in China, and having to go through a VPN.

I have an old friend in Hong Kong who I have not been in contact with for awhile. I thought about calling him when the Wuhan flu first started to see how he was doing. I decided not to just to keep him off any government list.

I would expect anything other than audio messaging in the local dialects would be risky, since texts are readily searchable and the Mandarin speech-to-text function is said to be surprisingly accurate, thereby making audio messaging in Mandarin also risky.

Thats him....CCP lover. Had a HUGE fanboi page.....of himself! He bragged about smoking a pack of ciggys a day and didn't need 2nd Amendment and how American was already worse commies than current China. I bet he is on a vent now. Sucks to be a big eyed round nose foreign devil in China right now.

I always thought he should have the zot....he actually thought he was smarter than he actually was....which wasn't that much.

Oh well, hoping the best for him while we sit on our 300 acres with lots of shootin', fishin', huntin', garndin', muddin', riddin', cookin', and prayin' during our quarantine. Lots more freedom here, still, methinks.

Actually, I was supposed to be working in China now, but assignment was cancelled, postponed until September. My friends and colleagues tell me that while life is getting more normal there are still restrictions. Foreigners face some bureaucratic difficulties obtaining necessary health clearances.
