New study casts doubt on hyrdoxychloroquine’s effectiveness in treating coronavirus vs. standard existing best practice for conventional care
Tech Crunch ^ | 03/25/2020 | Darrel Etherington

In a prime example of why President Trump shouldn’t be endorsing any unproven potential treatments for the novel coronavirus behind the current global pandemic, a new small-scale study by researchers in China indicates that the antimalarial drug hydroxychloroquine actually isn’t any more effective than standard, existing best practice for conventional care of patients with the virus.

The study, which included 30 patients with a control of 15 who received no treatment, with the other half being treated with hydroxychloroquine, showed that there was a statistically insignificant difference in the number of patients who tested negative for the drug after a week. During the study, those who received conventional treatment were provided anti-virals that are currently recommended for use in China, including Iopinavir and ritonavir, and after a week, 13 of the 15 control patients showed no sign of the virus, while 14 of the 15 who were treated with hydroxychloroquine showed the same.

An earlier small-scale study of 30 patients by French researchers published last week had shown indication that hydroxychloroquine used alone was effective in reducing the duration and severity of COVID-19, while using it in combination with an antibiotic called azithromycin increased its effectiveness. The study has been criticized by some for its methods – which is the entire purpose of scientific study and medical research, wherein people submit their studies for peer review prior to publication, and then other researchers challenge their assumptions, results and findings.

Trump is obviously not a scientist or medical professional, and yet he has been touting the efficacy of hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine during the White House’s daily coronavirus task force press briefings, and on Twitter, including when he called for them to be “put in use IMMEDIATELY” on March 21.

The study, which included 30 patients with a control of 15 who received no treatment ... reject this outright. Redo the study with with more people. Statistical error is too high with a population that small.

When they say “no treatment” they actually meant no treatment with HCQ. They did get anti-virals. So 28 out of the 30 were cured with either HCQ or antivirals. It’s ridiculously deceiving.

I don’t doubt it. Apparently, the MFM in this country along with the dim party has sold America out to probably every communist on earth.

More TDS. Thanks, TechCrunch.

So chloroquine works slightly better than the super expensive high tech antivirals.

Wow. This is almost as dumb as the governor of Nevada banning the use and the idiot who drank fish tank treatment.

Read the first sentence and to stop there. If it were a REAL tech report, they would simply state what was measured and the results.

Kind of a waste of time to doubt it? Especially since we will know in 5? days.
Unless NY dims find a way to sabotage the trial?
Would have felt better if they would have tried it on a Red State as well.

It also says they received ‘no treatment’ and then goes on to say they gave them anti-virals that are ‘best practice’.

Agreed. I wouldn’t put it past the CCP to put out a false study just to cause even more damage.

The way they are behaving, they may well become an international pariah.

You should all be ashamed of yourselves...calling a clinical study conducted in China, a "China study."

Don't you know that's racist and breeds stigma?

Both started with fevers and then started having breathing difficulties. They started the drugs and felt better within 24 hours. That’s all the info he gave me as he was on his cell driving home. He did also say that he was just now able to get test results back in 36 hours.

No doubt. They, like our press, cannot survive is Donald J. Trump is reelected as president. Like the Democrats and leftist supporters. While the leftist reason is TDS while the CCP & Democrat Party is anger that he is upsetting all of their plans so carefully crafted plans to destroy this country and take control. The CCP has deceived the Democrats to believe that they will be allowed to control this country but they actually despise them more than Donald J. Trump. But they will be easier to defeat in the end because the Democrats are more than willing to give the CCP everything they desire just as long as they keep getting enriched financially by the CCP.

Ok, the study is not hydroxychloquine vs nothing.
The study involves whether it is better than 2 antiviral medications, lopinavir and retonovir. Both showed similar levels of improvement.

Those antivirals are much scarcer and harder to produce than Hydroxychloroquine.

I’m no scientist, but, “difference in the number of patients who tested negative for the drug after a week”, and “reducing the duration and severity of COVID-19”, seems to be comparing apples to oranges.

Unless I am missing something Tech Crunch seems to be exposing itself to be “criticized by some for its methods”.

Also who really trust what the Chinese say anymore anyway?

I stopped reading after I saw the population size, knowing the study was bogus.

It’s saying the results between the two groups were essentially the same. Actually the HCQ faired slightly better. What exactly is their point?

Not sure what the author's agenda is (ha ha, it's totally transparent TDS) but the takeaway for normals is that the the expensive drugs and cheap drugs are equally effective, so take the cheaper ones.

It’s really sad when people just blast out their comments without reading the article. Thanks for the post.

Did you even read your own article? The “control group” DID get treated but with antivirals rather than HCQ. Both groups had essentially the same outcomes, with HCQ faring slightly better. Between the two treatments 27 (erroneously claimed 28 earlier) of the 30 recovered. The study proves only that there are more options which is good.

All you need to read.

The data don't support the conclusion.
