Chloroquine or Plaquenil: What is it and can it really treat Coronavirus?

Coronavirus patients are dying to stay alive.

That’s what happened when one man, worried about becoming infected with COVID-19, decided to self-medicate with aquarium cleaner containing chloroquine phosphate.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, chloroquine phosphate, or simply chloroquine, along with its analog hydrochloroquine (brand name Plaquenil), are anti-parasite, anti-inflammatory drugs used to prevent or treat parasitic infections, namely malaria, as well as autoimmune disorders, including rheumatoid arthritis and lupus.

The powerful additive is also commonly found in fish tank cleaner, according to Arizona’s Banner Health hospital, where the man was treated before his untimely death.

Despite President Trump’s earnest recommendation of the drug — which has proven to be an effective treatment for some — in press conferences and on Twitter, medical experts are urging consumers and coronavirus patients to consult a doctor before taking chloroquine phosphate (also called Aralen) as it could cause serious complications and death in patients with certain pre-existing ailments. Fatal overdoses have also been recently documented in Nigeria.

“@WHO has NOT approved the use of chloroquine for #COVID19 management,” tweeted the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control. “Scientists are working hard to confirm the safety of several drugs for this disease. Please DO NOT engage in self-medication. This will cause harm and can lead to death.”

"The combination of hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin to treat the coronavirus has not been proven safe and effective through large scale clinical trials,” wrote Dr. Eugene Gu to his nearly 400,000 followers on Twitter. “Promising them as miracle drugs gives false hope.”

Anecdotal evidence has suggested a combination of hydrochloroquine and the antibiotic azithromycin (also known as Z-Pak) may have “potential for benefit in patients who are hospitalized with coronavirus,” says Dr. James DiNicolantonio, a cardiovascular research scientist and doctor of pharmacy based in Kansas City, Missouri.

The fish tank solvent that treats aquatic parasites contains the same active ingredient as the drug, but in a different form that can poison people.

Did you read the article, particularly the second paragraph? Did Trump really say cloroquine is safe for humans, did any FReepers hear, as opposed as to what NBC reported?

aquarium cleaner ...

you know, warfarin is the same ingredient as rat poison, so taking rat poison would be less expensive, right?

I thought the post was somewhat unbiased but I guess they want a a piece of Trump as well as the rest of the press. Chloroquine phosphate is NOT chloroquine. They have a different molecular weight and whist the underling structure is similar between the 2 they arr not identical. Chloroquine phosphate’s formula is C18H32ClN3O8P2 with a Molecular Weight of 515.9g/mol. CVhloroquine’s formula is C18H26ClN3 with a molecular weight of 319.9g/mol. Chloroquine phosphate contains 3 molecules of Cyanic Iodide, which is toxic, and 6 less hydrogen molecules than Chloroquine. The husband died because they were careless and behaved stupidly.

Why does the author even quote this notorious Trump stalker/hater?

. I didn’t intend to suggest it was. Yes those are different compounds.

2 symptoms of Diabetes is increased hunger and thirst, I eat to modest meals a day, no sugar, no sodas no snacks. I do not have these issues.

The big problem is the SLOW DIGESTION, when it takes 4 hrs to digest 2 eggs 2 slices of toast anybody else would digest in 1 hr, I’m still in agony from that amount. Gastropresis diet is NO FIBER, all a diabetic diet does is cause projectile puking or diarrhea. Took them 4 yrs to finally run the right test, as long as I avoid Fiber I do fairly well. GP has to do with, Gastroparesis is caused by nerve injury, including damage to the vagus nerve. In its normal state, the vagus nerve contracts (tightens) the stomach muscles to help move food through the digestive tract which was damaged in a fall.

Days I’m sick and don’t eat, when I can’t even drink half a cup of black coffee for breakfast I’m sick and don’t eat it would just come back up.
