The coronavirus pandemic has led to a rare surge of online posts in Thailand questioning King Maha Vajiralongkorn and the monarchy. On Sunday a government minister subsequently warned that inappropriate posts could lead to jail. Insulting the monarchy is a crime, punishable by up to 15 years in prison. Thailand has been a constitutional monarchy since a 1932 revolution ended absolute royal rule, but the monarchy remains a central part of traditional Thai culture. I have read that the Corona virus spreads more slowly in hot places, so the king would be better off in Thailand.

The old king was much loved and respected. You still see his photo in businesses around Thailand. The new one is another story. He has had multiple wives and actually named one of his mistresses the “official consort”. One of his wives was prohibited from saying anything negative about him in the divorce hearing (illegal to say anything bad about the king, even if it’s true) so she was cut off with very little. The king’s fortune is about $30 billion. Incredible.
