Shaken not Stirred?
Vanity ^ | 3/21/2020 | Oshkalaboomboom

I have all of the ingredients to make my own hand sanitizer using alcohol, aloe vera and hydrogen peroxide. Every recipe I have read calls for putting the ingredients in a bowl or large measuring cup, adding the ingredients, stirring then pouring into a container for use or storage. I would imagine that by using this method there is always going to be a certain amount left in the mixing container. So my idea is to pour the ingredients into my storage bottle, putting the cap on, giving it a good shake to mix things up then leaving it for storage. So the question is will shaking it rather than stirring it damage the mixture or do something bizarre like creating vapors which will cause the bottle to swell and possibly explode?

I don’t think you absolutely need aloe vera gel.
You can substitute Dawn or any gentle-on-skin dishwashing liquid soap. It’s the strong alcohol that is the disinfecting agent.

But if you do use dish soap, you’d have to wash with water & dry every time, not like “hand sanitizer” that only requires a squirt & a rub.

Personally, I prefer the alcohol-soap + water at home. It’s more thorough.
The alcohol+ aloe vera hand sanitizer is what I take to go out of the house.

thanks Radu- i woulda guessed way too little alcohol- We have a bottle of 70% and one 90% isopropyl- We’ll use the 90% for this- What i read is that the 90% evaporates pretty quick- but i think mixed with the gel (We’re gonna use Glycerine- can’t use aloe), it should be good

We will use the old hand sanitizer bottle when it runs out- it’s got the pump on it so it’ll be good to have i n the house- for going out, we have smaller hand sanitizer bottles- carry sizes- so wer’e good to go on containers too-

Thanks- My guess for the amount of alcohol woulda been way too little- thanks for tip on the peroxide- We’ve got plenty of that- We don’t care much how it feels- just as long as it works to killinate the nasties-

something is up though with amazon shipping- a product i order 2 weeks ago hasn’t arrived yet- I heard that amazon is only sending ‘essential items’ so don’t know if that has anything to do with it, or if the product just got lost somewhere- hopefully you get yours-

I would think glycerin counts as essential, so the fact that ours has shipped is a good sign that you might feel comfortable ordering some soon. Hope your previous order isn’t lost. Amazon is really good about checking once you figure out where the contact information appears on their site.

I use dawn in my kitchen, and sometimes I wash my hands with it. I’m not sure where the idea that it’s gentle comes from; it’s designed to dissolve grease, including the natural oils on your skin; it’s very hard on my skin. Of course, I’m referring to the original blue dawn; I’ve seen some peach colored dawn that claims to be gentle. Perhaps we’re comparing apples to oranges. :)

You’re welcome.
I would have guessed too little, too, but it makes sense. We want the majority of what’s in the bottle to kill the nasties and the little bit of aloe is just to keep our hands from drying out.

I bought a large pump bottle of hand sanitizer a couple of weeks ago simply because I’d emptied the last one. I use it to refill the small bottle I keep in my purse. What they’re recommending everyone do, I’ve been doing for several years so it’s habit. Apparently it works well because I haven’t had as much as a cold in 5 or 6 years now.

Happy mixing. :-)

Normal vodka...not enough.

Go with Everclear (150 proof, no need for the 190 proof stuff). The Aloe Vera (or other substances) just thicken, add some scent and moisturizer.

You’d probably be fine with just a squirt of Everclear on your hands.

I have 96% ethyl alcohol. I actually do have a bottle of Everclear that I use for making fruit liqueurs but I will save that for when I run out of everything else.
