Costco Is Now Refusing Returns on High-Demand Items Like Rice And Toilet Paper
Yahoo finance ^ | March 20, 2020 | Kristin Salaky

Posted on 03/20/2020 1:09:15 PM PDT by Morgana

Notices posted at Costco this week indicate the store is no longer accepting returns on key items that many are stocking up on the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

The signs, posted by several Costco Instagram accounts (not affiliated with the store itself), indicate that returns are not being accepted on toilet paper, paper towels, rice, water, sanitizing wipes, and Lysol.

It's not clear if the new policy is store-by-store or part of a national corporate push. Costco announced limits earlier this week on certain items that have seen a spike in purchases as customers stock up. This could be part of that policy, but we've reached out to Costco for more information. For the time being, it's best to refer to your local Costco for more information on its policies.

Because they know that only a complete moron would return those items. Anyone with any sense could sell these unwanted items for twice what they paid for them.

“Lawsuits coming in 3 ..., 2..., 1...”

Agree, be ready for class-action. While I agree with them, if they had HALF A BRAIN, they would have seen this coming and not waited until the hoarders stocked up before coming up with the new policy.

And it’s not just viruses and bacteria.

Bed bugs anyone?

Cockroaches?

No thanks.

The people who are really going to pay are those who are still using outhouses. And those who eat green bananas.

It can get moldy. It’s made to deteriorate rapidly in moisture.

Sucks to be them, then.

Let their greed come back and bite them.

Who would return TP??

I have TP, still, that I bought during 0bammie’s reign. I remembered it was up in the attic...lol.

It’s something you’ll always need.

They can donate their rice to the local food bank.

Unreal.

No store is required to accept returns.

Costco explicitly states you can return any item you want, with restrictions. Those restrictions include electronic, diamonds, alcohol, cigarettes, and the like. Nowhere is it implied that things like toilet paper cannot be returned, and even if that's the policy now, it wasn't in place at the time of the panic purchases.

I am not trying to defend the people who overbought supplies at Costco and elsewhere (to the detriment of others). I am just pointing out what the lawyers are going to harp on if Costco prevents the return of these items purchased before any policy changes, if they indeed have been made corporate wide.

“You bought 10 36 count bundles of toilet paper, you weren’t buying for personal use, you buying for resale and you are now a wholesaler/reseller and they can refuse your return.”

Actually, that’s about what I have (even more paper towels). But no, I have no plans to speculate or return. As I see it, long-term, we’ll be very lucky to match today’s quality, and there is absolutely NO WAY that we’ll match today’s prices (once we devalue our currency by 50% to ‘pay’ for this). Our family should be good for 5 to 10 years...and hopefully by then, we’ll be back to where we left off a month ago.

But I bought it over weeks, starting right after Wuhan...I wasn’t about to join the infected masses in their mad-dash over the past 2 weeks!

“Well...maybe this means we’ve hit PEAK Covid19...”

We still have (some) food available - still weeks to go to hit ‘peak’.

Maybe some kinds - I still have my 2008 stash, and it’s like new.

“And for whoever bought all the bulk brown rice, I’ll buy 10 pounds or so for 10% of the cost. A-hole!”

Rice is very a poor food to try and survive on. I bought only a few items but being in Florida they’re good backups for hurricane season: some canned meats, dried green split peas, and sauerkraut.

Isn’t it racist to bring up something like rice in connection with a Chinese virus?
