Sure, it would have mattered plenty. They only had to test ‘suspicious’ individuals.

“at scale”... I don’t think that important. Governors could have ordered a sufficient number of tests.
Cuomo or Newsome was able to order a very large number given the capability of the hospitals and labs there. Idaho, not that many.

all that glitters is not gold
https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/323692#is-quinine-safe

you’d have to drink almost 20 liters of today’s dilute tonic water daily to achieve the daily dose typically prescribed for malaria.
That may come as bad news for anyone hoping to cure the deadly infection with a nightly tippling session, but it should come as a relief to the rest of us, because quinine comes with side effects
.

I think you are asking governors to be very smart, very courageous, and willing to take risks alienating the CDC.

Many of their own labs would have been giving them flak for ordering a possibly unreliable test (remember—that was the CDCs position on foreign tests).

That is a _big_ ask, not totally impossible, but a stretch.

I have trouble blaming state folks for not being outstanding, when all the CDC had to do was just be ok.

Many of us have governors (I raise hand) who just aren’t that bright, and such creative thinking is far beyond their capability.

Sure, but it’s nonetheless their job.
And their fault when they fail.

I know the media isn’t going to point that out, but we should.
Federalism depends upon the states being held to their responsibilities. Or else it will disappear.

Probably as far as I will get with this point...

I believe a recent Italian study said that more than half of Italy’s Chinese Virus fatalities were over 70 with diabetes and some form of cardiovascular disease.

The key with prepping is to do it in advance. It’s a little late for CoronaPrep, but I hope everyone on FR will be 100% prepared for the next big event. Keep posting/sharing great info!

Pollster:

You are going to get another chance.

When the stores calm down and restock in a few weeks, that is the time to prep for stage 2.

There will be a stage 2.

The “plan” is to reopen the economy sometime this summer, and then the virus will be back big time in the fall.

All invasive medical procedures, including those conducted through an existing orifice, are on my permanent “do not do” list and am willing to sustain the consequences.

LOL!

I get that.

FWIW I had my first colonoscopy two years ago. But my ex-husband had one some 10 years earlier and the prep one has to go through the day before is not pleasant but OMG! The way my husband whined and complained and moaned and groaned and acted like it was the very worst thing that had ever happened to him, so I wasn’t looking forward to it.

But it really wasn’t all that bad at all. Yes, you do not eat anything but clear liquids 24 hours before and have to take laxatives mixed with something like orange Gatorade and yes, you spend a lot of time on the toilet until you aren’t pooping anything but a clear liquid, but I passed the time by watching Jim Gaffigan specials on my Kindle.

After the procedure, after I came out of the anesthesia, the doctor told me it all went well and said “in fact you have a beautiful colon”, to which I replied in my best Carl Spackler impression – “So I got that going for me, which is nice.”

The doctor fell out laughing (he must be a Caddyshack fan).

I’ve given blood many, many times and plasma, and several uncomfortable procedures (the cervical biopsy was bad because the GYN didn’t numb me enough and it was the most intense pain I’d ever experienced even as it only lasted about 5 seconds and the first mammogram I had, they called me back 3 times for more pics as they thought the saw something) and I’m not at all squeamish. Except for my eyes. Don’t mess with my eyes.

I hate when I go to the eye doc for my annual exam and they do that puff of air thing. Not to mention the thought of contact lenses or Lasix freaks me out.

Here is also a very good Sky News report:

Coronavirus: 'They call it the apocalypse' - inside Italy's hardest-hit hospital

This is coming here. Wife's health system has ordered up 60 more respirators and now has 30+ on service and not yet counted.

President Trump has to file an executive order to override some of the HIPAA requirements. Without this, we will never get a grip on the spread and severity of the pandemic.
