We are used to living in a nation with an excellent health care system.

What happens if that is no longer the case for an extended period of time?

Think about it. Think hard.

What happens if we don't even touch our health care capacity?

A friend who works in a hospital is telling me that they are worried about blood supplies.

The system gets a lot of its blood from blood drives at schools, colleges, and work places — all of which are currently shut down.

Not sure why they need blood for pneumonia, fever, etc.

Thanks. That makes sense.

I have a feeling a lot of this panic is going to subside this week, no thanks to the media. Normal people are going to stop and think, “What the hell am I doing? This is insane.”

And that’s the problem a lot of secondary things like that, and the ability to treat people with other medical conditions.

The family of a 16-year-old boy in intensive care has asked the Netherlands to “Wake up and take this virus seriously.”

Hospitals need blood for many other ailments, and folks are reluctant to give blood right now for many reasons (some legit, some not).

Blood has a short shelf-life.

I agree. Low expectations yields limited accomplishment. My son was enamored of Einstein's writing on relativity, but realized he lacked a grounding in trigonometry as part of understanding the material. I ran him through a crash course in trig over a couple weeks. That was enough. He earned a Physics degree and worked as a TA in the physics labs at ISU. Challenge and support the inquisitive student.

“No, it’s not.”

What would a SHTF situation look like to you?

A great discussion of “systems thinking”.

It is not taught in school, and many FReepers do not know how to do it:

https://thesystemsthinker.com/systems-thinking-what-why-when-where-and-how/

That explains many of the “flu bros” and other variations on that theme.

“I’ve been blue collar all my life and I doubt the shops like I’ve worked at will even take that two weeks off.”

They will take plenty of time off when they are sick.
