Of interest....

On August 19, 2009, while speaking to the Kiwanis Club of Greater Columbus, Calley issued an apology for his role in the My Lai massacre. Calley said:

“There is not a day that goes by that I do not feel remorse for what happened that day in My Lai,” Calley told members of the Kiwanis Club of Greater Columbus on Wednesday. His voice started to break when he added, “I feel remorse for the Vietnamese who were killed, for their families, for the American soldiers involved and their families. I am very sorry.”[43]

As I understand it, were it not for President Johnson and his Project 100,000 initiative, he would never have been accepted for the Army.

Project 100,000 applied to accepting mental category IV individuals into the pool of males eligible for the draft as enlisted men.

Calley was an officer and subject to the established higher than average 110-120 GT intelligence requirements for commissioning and service.

Calley’s failing was moral, not intellectual. Although, to be fair, his leadership failed him before, during, and after the mission as well.

Too bad Calley didn’t think to apologize to the United States Army, the Armed Forces of the United States of America as organizations or to the profession of arms as an honorable calling while he was at it.
