How To Get Food Delivered Safely During Coronavirus Outbreak

written by David Lindfield March 15, 2020

Fox News’ Michael Hollan published the “delivery do’s and don’ts” to ensure safety precautions are taken for those who use food delivery services.

“As more and more people across the U.S. are preparing to stay in for the time being,” Hollan writes, “some may be asking if it’s safe to get food delivered to their house.”

CNET reported that food delivery services such as Doordash, Uber Eats, Grubhub and Postmates have continued to operate.

These services help people participate in “social distancing,” but they still should take precautions, the report adds.

Companies have started implementing: contactless delivery options.”

Some companies allow customers to provide the driver with drop-off instructions, such as dropping the food off at the door.

More from Fox News:

Officials with the Centers for Disease Control [CDC] and Food and Drug Administration [FDA] said they have not found evidence that the virus could be transmitted through food, but it’s still possible for it to stay on surfaces for several days.

Former Baltimore Health Commissioner Leana Wen, an emergency physician and public health professor at George Washington University, told CNET, “The virus can live on instruments that people touch, including takeout containers and utensils. Therefore, people should wash our hands after we touch these items and before we eat or touch our faces.”

CNET also wrote that people should wash their hands after handling cash. While many services would allow people to pay online, many people still tip the delivery person in cash.

It may be a good idea to tip a little extra during this time period, but don’t forget to wash up afterward.

The Department of Homeland Security has recommended keeping a two week supply of food and water on hand and double checking supplies of prescription medications.

  1. Make sure all the cooks and staff at the restaurant practice good hygiene.
  2. Make sure your delivery driver practices good hygiene and his car is been sanitized.
  3. Make sure the driver leaves the food in your front porch bin that you've sanitized.
  4. Wear double gloves to retrieve the food from the bin.
  5. Take off the outer pair of gloves carefully and dispose of them.
  6. Then wash one gloved hand and use it to remove the glove on the other hand.
  7. Take the now-ungloved hand and wash it thoroughly before removing the other glove.
  8. Wash both ungloved hands thoroughly with hot water and soap.
  9. Open the paper bag and remove your food containers.
  10. Now wash your hands again. Open the food containers and transfer the food to your bowls and plates, but be sure to wash your hands again after touching the food containers.
  11. Bon Apetit!

"All the food the driver hasn't eaten on the way over, just leave outside the door! And if you don't deliver to our side of the road, leave it across the street. I'll come and get it!"

Oh, and give them a name. They need a name!

IIRC, within 24 hrs of Katrina, the News reported that people in New Orleans had resorted to cannibalism due to food shortages. It wasn’t true, of course, but golly it sure sounded exciting!

Now we seem to have a national wave of pizza delivery trucks being hijacked. Or something.

Food production is fine.
Transportation is fine.

We are trying to maintain a little social distance. I guess that’s not sufficiently dramatic or interesting.

I frequently use Grocery Home Delivery services.
It’s convenient. One should not be afraid of everything.
Paranoia is not healthy either.

Had some extra stuff delivered a few hours ago via Instacart. The store was out of some obvious things - Instant milk and, of course, TP. But they had most everything else. Did the tipping on the Instacart site, nice delivery person.

There are some freepers here who are seriously paranoid about paranoia.

How to get food safely? Go to Publix, Wegmans, Market Basket, Trader Joe’s, Spouts or any grocery store, buy produce (fruits and veggies for those of you in Rio Linda), meat, milk and wine. Go home, and make an inexpensive dinner for your family.
